[edit]Is the catalogue here actually prepared by Machaut or is it a later work on the basis of the mentioned "... order in which ..."?217.159.182.51 11:17, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
The order in this is that of the complete works as compiled by Leo Schrade, which I believe is based off Machaut's manuscript E, the final one prepared during Machaut's life (dated approximately 1370). The abbreviations beforehand, though not Machaut's, have been accepted with scholarly currency, hence their inclusion. Anderfreude (talk) 01:29, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Should we not title this 'List of musical works of Guillaume de Machaut'? Just because it paints quite a restricted picture of Machaut's output. To see that Machaut wrote only one Chanson Royal for example is misleading. Or perhaps might we expand this article into a list of Machaut's complete works -- musical and non-musical -- much as Machaut perceived his own creative output? It would only require a referencing system where we could see which works had been set to music. A referencing system would also indicate which musical works had been edited contrapuntally -- i.e. had another voice added in later MSS in some motets -- which affects the styling of work titles. Thinking of M23, it might make sense to title it Inviolata genitrix/Felix Virgo/Ad te suspiramus (M23), but that would fail to acknowledge its appearance in later sources with an added contratenor. Lots of questions and not many answers, but I'd suggest just listing all works, with perhaps a key system to indicate a) which works are set to music and b) perhaps their placings in MSS and later versions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.76.7.224 (talk) 18:31, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
