Re PROD

[edit]

WP:AFD is the correct location to debate a contested PROD. (non-admin closure) IffyChat -- 12:05, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Seems to me that, assuming it can be reliably sourced, this list could be integrated into the ship article in a dedicated section, even collapsed if that was considered necessary. Lists of commanders are pretty standard for army units and formations, so I don't see why we wouldn't do it for a capital ship. • Delete - The consensus at wt:ships was to not have such lists and instead add notable COs to the article prose. The few notable COs on this page have already been added to the main article making this page needless and redundant.
I think these lists, whether in an article or stand-alone are a bad idea. Lists about some notable COs for retired ships will encourage lists about non-notable COs on active ships. Lists that will require constant updating, with little to no sourcing available, work that won't be done by those who create the lists, but instead to those of us that try to maintain these pages... pages that are about the ships after all, not non-notable crew. imho - wolf 11:29, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep As this list is presumably accurate and contains links to several notable officers then it should be retained. For any major human organisation such as a company or a township, people will want to know who was in charge at any given time, and capital ships are of a similar size and importance. It would be reasonable to integrate the information into the main article, presenting it as a sidebar or table. Andrew D. (talk) 11:53, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to parent article. Per WP:SOLDIER someone commanding a capital ship in combat is presumed to be notable, I see no reason why these captains would be any different. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 13:46, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The notable COs from the list have already been added to the prose in the main article. But as for adding a "List of COs" to the article, I would suggest bringing that up at wt:ships first, as there was a recent consensus there against that. fyi - wolf 23:02, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've notified both projects. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:27, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Captains are not considered notable enough to have their own articles here (unless certain exceptional circumstances are met), so the logical thing to do would be to merge them into the ship article unless they ended up at flag rank, in which case I'd say they may have enough notability to stand on their own. @TomStar81: - just a reminder that there is a project consensus against having "lists of COs" in naval ship articles. Over the past several months, any lists that existed or were created, have been removed. Any notable COs on the lists are added to the article prose with a link to their BLP. As is the case here, the few notable COs have already been added to the main article. FYI - wolf 09:50, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. On the existing consensus at WP:SHIPS that only notable individuals should feature in a ships articles it seems unnecessary to have an article which lists every individual who happened to command a particular warship. WP:SOLDIER says anyone commanding a capital ship in COMBAT is presumed to be notable, most of these were peacetime commanders. Comparing a capital ship to a company or township is not valid, firstly a capital ship has nowhere near the employees of a major company or significant town and secondly the degree to which a Commander of a ship can make unilateral decisions compared to a CEO or Mayor is mush less. A better comparison would be the manager of the local McDonalds Lyndaship (talk) 15:28, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – per wolf's reasoning. But this is an odd place for this discussion. What happens if we decide to delete? Also I'll just note that adding this as a collapsed list to the main article would violate MOS:DONTHIDE. Kendall-K1 (talk) 16:24, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
