Prairie View and Sam Houston State

[edit]

Both of these institutions are located within Houston's MSA and CSA respectfully. Prairie View is actually in what is considered "suburban/exurban Houston", as even the Houston Premium Outlets mall is just less than 10 minutes away. Texas A&M is actually in Houston's market area and College Station receives Houston media and borders Houston's MSA. I can understand you not including Stephen F. Austin though, as it is a little further away, but my point still stands. This is to you Postoak by the way.

XxTrillvillexX9 (talk) 19:13, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

XxTrillvillexX9, my understanding is this list should only include colleges and universities with a campus physically located within the city limits, not the Houston MSA, CSA or market area. Wouldn't you think it would be confusing for a reader to see Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M and SHSU listed here when they know the schools are physically located in Prairie View, Texas, College Station, Texas and Huntsville, Texas, respectively? I think we should only list the schools that have Houston as the location found in the infobox or lead paragraph of each college/university article. Thanks, Postoak (talk) 05:50, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so Postoak. Look at most other "list of colleges" pages, and you will see that they include more than just the colleges located in the major city. The include all colleges in the MSA/CSA. Chicago's and Dallas-Fort Worth's page comes to mind. Your list isn't a good representation of colleges in the area. The state considers Texas A&M, Prairie View, SHSU, and SFA, as being in the general Houston market area. They should be included in this list. Especially the first three I named. I feel you're limiting Houston. When someone sees the list of colleges in Houston thread, they will see a false representation of places of higher education in the area. XxTrillvillexX9 (talk) 15:27, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I disagree with you. Remember that the D-FW list does represent a metropolitan area. Please direct me to where the state considers Texas A&M, Prairie View, SHSU, and SFA, as being in the general Houston market area? I don't think I am "limiting" Houston by not including colleges and universities not located in the city, however, I may be incorrect. Why don't we get other opinions? - I contacted a few other editors to get their opinion. Thanks, Postoak (talk) 03:28, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
General rule of thumb: If the school itself claims to be in "Greater Houston" then I'd consider it, otherwise, no. Prarie View A&M looks too far out on a map. College Station/Texas A&M - no way, at least not until the west edge of Houston is closer to San Antonio than downtown. Even in the case of Dallas/Ft. Worth I'm hesitant to include Denton schools and have proposed removing them. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 06:01, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I guess some geography lessons 101 is in play here. Prairie View is in Waller County. A county that is very much in Houston's metro. Many of the professors at PV (I know some) pretty much all live in Houston's NW suburbs. It's only a 15 minute drive to Prairie View from Cypress. I can sort of understand you not including A&M, though the State of Texas considers it being in the Houston region. This is a reason why the University of Houston is having trouble becoming Tier-1 because the State sees A&M as Houston's Tier-1 university (they want the DFW area to have one now). Sam Houston State is in Houston's CSA. Most of its students come from the Houston area, and just like Prairie View, many professors commute from The Woodlands and Conroe, Texas. As for the Denton schools, heck no. Denton is not far from anything in DFW. Many of Fort Worth's suburbs are in Denton County and Denton is growing to the South. XxTrillvillexX9 (talk) 06:58, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sidebar: Rice University is a tier-1 university located in Houston [1][2] Postoak (talk) 17:29, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Then rename the article. If the article were named "List of colleges and universities in the Houston Area" that would stretch from Galveston to Huntsville and halfway to Beaumont, and well past Katy. Unless of course there was a "...Galveston area" and "...Huntsville area" list or some editor thought there should be one in which case the definition of "Houston area" would shrink. If it were "List of Colleges and Universities in the Houston Region" or "List of Colleges and Universities in Southeast Texas" that would go halfway to San Antonio, halfway to Corpus Christi, halfway to Dallas, and all the way to the Sabine River. If we want anything other than Houston and it's immediate surroundings, the article name should change.
However, renaming this article may require renaming other similar Lists of colleges and universities in Texas city articles so they are consistent.
By the way, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is sort of a special case, it's too hard to tease them apart, and doing so does more harm than good.
Personally, I think we should have articles based on the "Tier 1" areas or regions that the state of Texas uses and name and populate the articles accordingly. The Houston, Texas and other city and county articles can list schools directly in those articles or there could be lists or categories for Education in Houston, Texas, or Higher Education in Houston, Texas if need be. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 07:21, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
None of the Universities discussed above are in the Houston area, not even the Greater Houston area. Prairie Veiw is the closest, but still doesn't make it. What about Lamar University? It's closer than most of the others? No. And if you want to include SFA, you might as well include UT. --Evb-wiki (talk) 13:51, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Really? Prairie View is not in the Houston area? So, what is Waller County then? Go look at the "Greater Houston" area, go look at the Census, and what do you see? Waller County. Prairie View is very much in the Houston area. Sam Houston State is in the "Houston CSA" (combined-statistical area). Only Stephen F. Austin is way out there. I suggest you guys actually come out and see, or pull out a map. Lamar University is in Beaumont, and Beaumont is not in the Houston region. This article should be renamed "colleges in the Houston area", because the list is not representative on what is available in the area, as it only includes colleges in Houston city limits, which doesn't make sense. XxTrillvillexX9 (talk) 21:56, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind including universities in the Greater Houston area, but the list should indicate which cities they are really in. WhisperToMe (talk) 22:22, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
XxTrillvillexX9, why does it not make sense? IMHO, the article's title implies that it is a list of colleges and universities in Houston, Texas - not in the Houston MSA/CSA or whatever market demographics your suggesting. Inclusion criteria was never discussed, so I would assume the city limits is what the article's original creating editor had intended. If we want to expand the list to include the Greater Houston area, then fine. I would support the change/move as long as the list included the actual city location (as WhisperToMe recommended) and there is consensus. Postoak (talk) 23:16, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brainstorming - name of article

[edit]

Do we have a consensus that the name should match the scope, whatever scope that is? I think we do but if anyone objects, say so. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 03:19, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brainstorming - scope of article

[edit]

What should the scope of the article be? Houston city limits? Further out? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 03:19, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate articles

[edit]

We now have List of colleges and universities in Greater Houston as well as this list. The lead and content for both articles are identical, except for two entries in the expanded article. Probably the better solution was to move this list to the expanded list so that the links are moved as well. Postoak (talk) 21:52, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a non-controversial WP:MERGE. Go ahead and merge the articles and make one of them a redirect to the other. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 07:16, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that, I'm going to do the merge then delete the other article as a dupe. I will immediately revert my edit, the editors can discuss what to do about it from there.

Here's what I'm going to add and then revert, taken from List of colleges and universities in Greater Houston: Note: I had to nowiki the Image so it wouldn't violate the rules or break the flow of the text.

The edit of 19:37, 28 December is just a cut-and-paste copy of List of colleges and universities in Houston at the time.

Oppose to merge. That duplicate list should be deleted and placed on the Greater Houston article instead. —RJN (talk) 07:24, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment The net effect of my change:
  1. The List of colleges and universities in Greater Houston will be deleted as redundant
  2. The XxTrillvillexX9's edit history will be preserved on this talk page for legal reasons
  3. The content of the last pre-deletion-tagged version of List of colleges and universities in Greater Houston is identical to this old edit of List of colleges and universities in Houston
  4. The current edit of List of colleges and universities in Houston is identical to the pre-merge edit.
  5. After the deletion happens, you can move this article to that article and fix things up the way you want them. This will keep the edit history intact, a must for legal reasons.

Resolve name and scope

[edit]

I propose that this article be properly moved to the name of "List of colleges and universities in Greater Houston" that will include schools in the 10-county metropolitan area. Additionally, the list should provide the street address and county where each school is located. Thanks, Postoak (talk) 18:39, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have no feelings one way or the other, as long as the scope and name are consistent with each other. I would recommend that the scope be stated clearly in the opening sentence, as it is now, and that the counties be clearly indicated, either by list or by "Harris county and surrounding counties plus x, y, and z counties, "Harris and x county and surrounding counties" or something similar that would be crystal-clear to anyone looking at a map. Consider adding a free-image map of the multi-county area with the eligible counties highlighted. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 23:18, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

UH bias

[edit]

The entire public university section is obviously an attempt to embellish UH. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.32.58.26 (talk) 08:16, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
