Birthplace of the Coast Guard
[edit]I removed this nickname from the Newburyport entry. The town is recognized as the birthplace of the Coast Guard, but I find no evidence that it is a city nickname. See Cashman: City should brand itself with Coast Guard legacy (2006 article in local newspaper), this Coast Guard press release about the "birthplace" monument established in Newburyport in 2007, and Essex County Veterans Memorials and Monuments "Bragging Rights". --Orlady (talk) 15:17, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
The City of Firsts : Springfield vs. Taunton (Taunton?!)
[edit]According to the website http://www.springfield375.org, the City of Springfield has been the site more than 50 significant "firsts," including the first American-English dictionary (Merriam Webster 1806;) the first use of interchangeable parts in manufacturing (Thomas Blanchard, 1819, Springfield Armory;) the first vulcanization of rubber (Charles Goodyear, 1844;) the first American, gasoline-powered car (Duryea Brothers, 1983;) the first successful motorcycle (Indian, 1901;) the first modern, motorized fire engine and fire department, (Knox Automobile, 1905, Springfield Fire Department, 1907;) the first U.S. commercial radio station, (WBZ, 1920,) among dozens of other "firsts," e.g. the first post card, dog show, and horse show - not to mention the invention of basketball and the sport of basketball's first game.
What exactly has Taunton done to challenge Springfield for this nickname..? Historically, there has been only one city of greater importance of this Commonwealth during its first 400 years than Springfield, and that is Boston. Although Springfield experienced forty years of decline recently, while Boston suffered only twenty and the rebounded strongly, Springfield deserves its due. That aside, the city has revitalized considerably of late. 76.119.66.131 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:00, 24 July 2011 (UTC).
- It's amazing how many U.S. cities share the same nicknames and "claims to fame." It would be nice to have a source that explained the basis for each city's claims. However, this article reports all verified nicknames; Wikipedia is not the business of verifying the accuracy of nicknames. --Orlady (talk) 11:49, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Where is Lynn?
[edit]Why did you leave off Lynn in the list of nicknames? Can someone please add it? I would but I am intimidated by HTML. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.183.115.90 (talk) 19:22, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
