Cities?

[edit]

Is "List of cities..." the best name for this article? Most of the places mentioned here would be better described as towns, villages, or hamlets, in terms of population and size. See the City article for some distinctions. Camillus (talk) 00:06, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you should be redefining towns and cities, especially since Wikipedia is often cited as a source. blakdogg (talk) 01:51, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How to define these Locales

[edit]

I'm making a Talk to address my edits since they 'could' be controversial. There IS a special definition of 'township' in Guyana, and it would come with some fanfare and news reports- not 'population counts' so looking at census data and old gazetteers isn't going to help really. I've added a government source that would hopefully update if new ones are designated.

Village vs. Community: I think if something is called a 'village' in RSs enough times, then there's no point to defining it by 'population'. The census calls every listing a 'village' and there's villages with like... 1, 3, 5 people. So dictating naming rules is sort of... unhelpful? Unclear? And many of the missions and estates are also villages that WERE missions or estates. I think they ought to be moved into the village section, since 'village' is their current distinction.

The problem is that a lot of these places really lack good, solid sourcing and clear, (US/EUR-centric) definitions. Square pegs and all that.

Anyway, that's my 2c if anyone's confused.
