Tracking Original References
[edit]The following list of birds present in checklist of Karnataka, available online, does not have an original reference. They are merely listed in sub-regional checklists (or books carrying sub-regional checklists) and hence could not be verified. The list is produced below hoping that someone else will be able to find them and add it with correct citation. Since, I personally have not seen these lists, but have obtained the information from online lists, somebody who has access to these books can check if there is sufficient evidence to make an entry.
Geetha Nayak.K., Prabhakar Achar.K. A field guide to the Birds of Dakshina Kannada
All these birds are rare but not unlikely in Dakshina Kannada - however, I am unable to track the original reference for the same.
1. Puffinus pacificus (Gmelin, 1789) Wedge-tailed Shearwater (9)
2. Phaethon lepturus (Daudin, 1802) Yellow-billed Tropicbird (19)
3. Dromas ardeola (Paykull, 1805) Crab-Plover (434)
4. Chlidonias leucopterus White-winged Tern
5. Sterna dougallii (Montagu, 1813) Roseate Tern (466) (Wind-blown bird recovered from Udupi has been published ?)
6. Sterna repressa (Hartert, 1916) White-cheeked Tern (467)
7. Charadrius hiaticula (Linnaeus, 1758) Common Ringed Plover (378)
Ameen Ahmed, K.Yekanthappa.,I.F.S Birds of Bandipur National Park Field Director, Project Tiger, Mysore 1998 (Updated Dec.1998)
This list appears to be the result of volunteer based coordinated bird surveys.
1. Haliaeetus leucoryphus (Pallas, 1771) Pallas’s Fish-Eagle (174)
2. Falco severus (Horsfield, 1821) Oriental Hobby (214-215)
3. Sturnus contra (Linnaeus, 1758) Asian Pied Starling (1002-1004) (Salim Ali had a doubtful sighting from Bandipur)
4. Falco columbarius (Linnaeus, 1758) Merlin (217-218)
Grimmett, R, Inskipp, T & Inskipp, C. 1998. Birds of the Indian sub-continent.
1. Leptoptilos dubius (Gmelin, 1789) Greater Adjutant-Stork (67)
2. Chaetornis striatus (Jerdon, 1841) Bristled Grass-Warbler (1547) (Inskipp's paper in OBC Bulletin? )
Chakravarthy.A.K., Purna Chandra Tejaswi.K.P.Birds of Hilly regions of Karnataka
This book appears to have used a different taxonomic order and hence some extra-limital species has got an entry.
1. Cercomela fusca (Blyth, 1851) Indian Chat (1692)
2. Zoothera spiloptera (Blyth, 1847) Spot-winged Thrush (1737) (Extralimital, SL endemic)
3. Ixobrychus minutus (Linnaeus, 1766) Little Bittern (55)
4. Charadrius hiaticula (Linnaeus, 1758) Common Ringed Plover (378)
5. Pericrocotus roseus (Vieillot, 1818) Rosy Minivet (1089)
Daniels.R.J.R.Bird Community of Uttara Kannada, 1989
This list probably has observations by the author + observations made by others over the last one & a half centuries.
1. Orthotomus atrogularis (Temminck, 1836) Black-necked Tailorbird (1540) (Extralimital, NE species)
2. Pericrocotus roseus (Vieillot, 1818) Rosy Minivet (1089)
George, Joseph ed. (1994). Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Bangalore. Birdwatchers' Field Club of Bangalore
Though an annotated checklist, the source of entry for this species into Bangalore checklist does not find a mention.
Ixobrychus minutus (Linnaeus, 1766) Little Bittern (55)
As a pattern, atleast three historical lists include Little Bittern, a rare passage migrant in S. India; two of them lists Common Ringed Plover, a much over-looked (probably uncommon) winter visitor (or passage migrant) to S. India; two of them lists Rosy Minivet, a winter migrant which has been seen till Goa. Other species are unique to their own sub-regional lists. (Paintedstork (talk) 03:41, 23 October 2012 (UTC))
