TD Bank: what's the right name?
[edit]User:Ground Zero and User:70.25.130.165: This may seem like splitting hairs, but TD Canada Trust is the bank, and is a fully-owned subsidiary of TD Bank Financial Group--a holding company which also owns TD Waterhouse, TD Banknorth, and several other companies. To comply with chartered bank rules, almost all north-American banks are structured in such a way. Technically speaking, TD Bank Financial Group is not a chartered bank, but instead is what is known as a "Bancshares holding company".
So, in one sense, you are both right. But in another, more accurate sense, the bank we are all familiar with is TD Canada Trust. Owen× TALK 22:58, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- I agree, it should be listed as TD Canada Trust. --File:Ottawa flag.png Spinboy 23:42, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- In fact, TD Bank Financial Group is simply a marketing name for The Toronto-Dominion Bank and its subsidiaries. The legal name remains The Toronto-Dominion Bank. TD Canada Trust is a marketing name for the retail banking operations in Canada of The Toronto-Dominion Bank. The least confusing way to deal with marketing names which differ from legal names is to say "The Toronto-Dominion Bank, known as TD Bank Financial Group", or "Royal Bank of Canada, known as RBC Financial Group", or "Bank of Montreal, known as BMO Financial Group", or "The Bank of Nova Scotia, known as Scotiabank". For each of the banks mentioned in this paragraph, the entity in which shareholders invest is a chartered bank, not a holding company. TruthbringerToronto 03:12, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
"Big Six" banks
[edit]-I don't know what oint User:FirefoxRocks is trying to make. President's Choice Financial is NOT considered to be one of the "Big Six" banks. Scotiabank is. Ground Zero | t 04:14, 14 July 2006 (UTC) -I've never heard of a "Big Six", just "Big Five". National Bank has virtually no presence outside of Quebec. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.138.136.107 (talk) 22:34, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
- The market caps are way off. Only RBC and TD are close.
- Can you provide any data supporting your claim? Current numbers in the list have an appropriate reference. Do you disagree with the source or implying that the numbers were not properly copied? Truther2012 (talk) 14:41, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
credit unions
[edit]Credit unions should not be included in this list, unless the article is renamed. Otherwise, you're implying that credit unions are banks. --Rob (talk) 06:42, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- As well, the ATB is not a bank. It's a provincially owned financial institution, with a unique legal status. --Rob (talk) 21:45, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Rename / repurpose
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was move to List of banks and credit unions in Canada. Jafeluv (talk) 07:21, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
List of banks in Canada → List of financial institutions in Canada — Relisted for further input. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 21:59, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
In line with what Rob said, this should be renamed list of finacial institutions in Canada since seperating banks form credit unions from the ATB is overly legalistic, and doesn't follow the common sense grouping of the similar enities which offer identical services. --Kevlar (talk • contribs) 23:37, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose while separating banks from credit unions might be overly specific, "financial institution" is overly broad, since many financial institutions do no banking whatsoever. 76.66.197.30 (talk) 03:47, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
- Comment - If we keep credit unions, then I do support a name change. One possible criterion, is to require the institution be a member of Canadian Payments Association[1]. That avoids a problem being overly broad (they only have 121 members). --Rob (talk) 04:49, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Comment - then how about list of banks and credit unions in Canada, and including the ATB as a special case? --Kevlar (talk • contribs) 19:15, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'm fine with that. --Rob (talk) 00:58, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
- Comment: the proposed title is horribly misspelled. Oreo Priest talk 04:10, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

2001 List of Credit Unions
[edit]What's the significance of the 2001 list of credit unions? provided that we have the same list with assets and members for 2012? I proposed deleting the old one. Objections?Truther2012 (talk) 14:34, 12 June 2013 (UTC)
