List of awards for contributions to society and culture → List of awards for contributions to society – In order to distinguish from awards pertaining to culture, such as arts, literature, etc. PPEMES (talk) 14:15, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- The list as it stands includes awards pertaining to arts, literature, etc. It is not clear why they should be excluded. Dekimasuよ! 14:44, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- I started this one and others a few weeks ago in a drive to clear out the huge and confused Lists of awards so it could become a pure list of lists. The new list articles roughly correspond to the sub-categories of Category:Lists of awards. Three of them are decidedly fuzzy:
- List of awards for contributions to society and culture is the fuzziest of all. Probably all the "culture" awards would be best in a more specific category/list. So
- I can do that. Once done, both the list and Category:Awards for contributions to society and culture could be renamed to drop the culture. But the difference between "contributions to society" and "humanitarian and service" or even "civil awards" is not clear to me. Aymatth2 (talk) 15:29, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Aymatth2: I think such a division of this article into "society" and "arts and culture" would be wise. As for the other relaterad articles, I am open to any arguments. PPEMES (talk) 19:44, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
@PPEMES: As I see it, perhaps naively, there are three relevant domains, and I quote their WP articles:
- Humanities: Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human society and culture. They are covered by List of humanities awards, and related lists.
- Service: Community service, public service, selfless service – contributions to human society in the sense of helping others This seems to be covered by List of humanitarian and service awards.
- Culture: Culture is an umbrella term which encompasses the social behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities and habits of the individuals in these groups. There are lists for art, film, dance etc. but no umbrella list for culture.
I have taken a shot at separating this list into one for "Society" and one for "Culture". I suggest that the society list can be merged into List of humanitarian and service awards, and this article renamed to List of awards for contributions to culture, a place to put awards that do not fit into more specific categories of culture. - The categories should be fixed to match. After renaming Category:Awards for contributions to society and culture to Category:Awards for contributions to culture, which is in Category:Humanities awards, I would drop Category:Humanitarian and service awards from the renamed category. Humanitarianism, and Humanism for that matter, are not Humanities. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:06, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- Seems reasonable to me. Please feel free to proceed per WP:BOLD. PPEMES (talk) 08:22, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- I have gone ahead eith the move, with matching category changes. I have left "Awards for contributions to society" separate from "Humanitarian and service awards", because I suspect there are subtle differences. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:58, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
