Selection criteria
[edit]This is in response to Neurofreak but I think it deserves general open discussion. In this edit I was asked on what grounds was Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences excluded from the list. Per WP:LSC a list must have an unambiguous selection criteria with an inline citations. Per WP:SALLEAD that criteria should appear in the lead. The lead says
Although a number of Indian universities offer agricultural education, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the main regulator of agricultural education, recognizes 63 universities as Agricultural Universities, as of July 2017[update].[1]
That sounds pretty unambiguous to me: the selection criteria of the list is the 63 institutes which are listed by ICAR. Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences is not listed there (nor is National Dairy Research Institute) so it shouldn't appear on the list. Maybe it should have appeared on the list, but if we don't want to speculate, we can just say it doesn't fit the selection criteria. As always, a new consensus can change the criteria. I thought about changing the selection criteria so it also includes every member of the Indian Agricultural Universities Association (IAUA)[2] but that doesn't make any sense. Banaras Hindu University is a member of IAUA and it is far from being an agricultural university, so membership in IAUA is not a good criteria. I'm open to suggestions and I'll invite WP:INEI members to join the discussion.

- The ICAR source is certainly more reliable than IAUA, but Wikipedia listing should include all degree grating agricultural universities or institutes. It include the following 4 public deemed universities National Dairy Research Institute, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Central Institute of Fisheries Education. They are listed under 'Research Institute' on ICAR website.[3] Also, SHUATS, which was formerly a private deemed university but recently upgraded and taken over by the state of Uttar Pradesh and now a public State Agricultural University (SAU). The ranking of agricultural universities on ICAR website does include it (#30), which is the most recent (16.07.17) list there.[4]
Neurofreak (talk) 19:02, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Neurofreak: I think I can make this work. The selection criteria will be "universities[1][4] and deemed universities[3] recognized by ICAR". That way we don't need to say anything confusing about the upgrade of SHUATS, it simply falls under the selection criteria. We also don't need to mention IAUA (though we probably should, if only to say it is not the selection criteria). Seems we are the only editors who care, so I'll go ahead and do it.

Inclusion criteria again
[edit](koli 06:17, 17 March 2018 (UTC)) I wish to change the inclusion criteria List of agricultural universities in India. I wish to add other colleges and Private universities like Quantum University which offers Agriculture Courses in India. Please let me know if it possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arya.koli (talk • contribs)
- Oppose The name of the list is "List of agricultural universities". Are you suggesting that every university offering an agriculture course is an "agriculture university"? If so, can you support this claim by several reliable sources which use this term? Can you supply a clear and concise inclusion criteria? Can you suggest a practical way to create such a list and maintain it? --Muhandes (talk) 17:55, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose This is not a list of 'colleges' as you proposed to include. Since it is a 'List of agricultural universities', it excluded even the best departments of agriculture sciences in Indian universities like BHU and IIT Kharagpur. A new list/article about general agriculture education in India can include such universities/colleges. Neurofreak (talk) 19:07, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
(koli 10:29, 20 March 2018 (UTC)). As fer as i understand the Inclusion criteria depends or the guiding principle is affiliation to a regulating body. As such Quantum University is affiliated to UGC. UGC is the apex body overlooking all matters related to universities. The second hint i can deduce is that the institution vying to be in the aforesaid list should have a dedicated title to the effect of an institution for the study of agricultural sciences. Herein it would appear that indeed quantum does not qualify. However I note that Lovely Professional University also houses a faculty for agricultural with no clear declaration to a title that conveys overt implication that it is an exclusve center dedicated to the study of agricultural sciences. Yet they appear on the list List of agricultural universities and colleges. Could you please resolve this apparent paradox ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arya.koli (talk • contribs) 11:17, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you think the inclusion criteria for this list "depends or the guiding principle is affiliation to a regulating body". The consensus is that the term "agricultural universities in India" refers to universities specifically recognized by ICAR. See the comment above by Neurofreak which lists some very prominent departments of agriculture sciences which are not listed due to this criteria. Since you don't seem to agree, you will need to convince the community to change the consensus. As for Lovely Professional University, I'm not sure why you think inclusion of that university on a completely different list (List of agricultural universities and colleges) serves as an argument to change the inclusion criteria to this one. The solution for your "apparent paradox" is that this is an entirely different list with an entirely different purpose, and therefore an entirely different inclusion criteria. Feel free to discuss the inclusion criteria for List of agricultural universities and colleges on Talk:List of agricultural universities and colleges. --Muhandes (talk) 20:17, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
