Genesis

[edit]

I should begin by explaining that this is my own little project to find all of the computer science departments in America that grant Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Computer Science. I thought it would be of use to others as well, hence I'm adding it to Wikipedia. Here's my methodology to come up with the initial version of the page I added:

  1. Compile all ABET accredited CS programs
    • the alphabetical ordering (ignoring terms such as "University of" when sorting) comes from this list -- I thought it was a good way of organizing schools
  2. Added Top 108 CS Programs
    • Yes, it's really old, but if the department was around then, there's a good chance that it is now and they have a PhD program
    • I assumed the main campus locations unless otherwise specified
  3. Added schools I'm personally familiar with, however all program information came from that program's website
  4. I am deliberately keeping the focus of the page to schools with a Computer Science department, as opposed to ECE/CPE/IT/BIS/etc
  5. Likewise, some computer science departments offer graduate degrees in fields such as "Information Technology" -- these were not included either (although the department may still be listed)
  6. Added in regional accreditation for university, including degree levels offered
    • Lettered lists are degrees offered: (A)Associates, (B)Batchlors, (M)Masters, (D)Doctorate
    • A number in parenthesis following the letters is the number of Doctoral programs offered (information only available from WASC-ACCJC)
    • If the degree is spelled out, that is the highest degree the university has been accredited to issue
    • I did not include information about professional degrees and certificates, as my interest is on computer science academic degrees
    • I translated SACS-COC codes to similar language as used by MSACHE
  7. Since my main interest is CS PhD programs, I then looked at the schools that offered doctoral degrees and filled in what Master's and Doctoral degrees they offered, and what the department homepage is -- this was an extremely laborious and time consuming process
  8. I lumped degrees such as "Master's of Computer Science" and "Master's of Software Engineering" under "MS"
  9. Likewise, if a school just said they offered a "Master's" degree, I assumed it was an "MS"
  10. For the schools that offered PhD's in Computer Science, I looked up their Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Basic Code, to get a better idea of what the academic atmosphere is like.

And that's how I compiled the initial list. I think it would be great if people filled in the blanks and added institutions that are missing, and I'd ask the following if you do:

  1. Please keep it to departments that offer post-secondary degrees in computer science proper.
  2. Please make sure that all information is verifiable on or under the department homepage (that's why I included all of the department-specific homepages). Don't just say, "Well I know that such-and-such a school offers that degree." I found it interesting at times that some schools didn't offer a MS degree (only a PhD), and others didn't offer a PhD. Also keep in mind that schools change their degree offerings from time-to-time. I had Tulane University on the list until I found out that their CS department just closed.

I think those are the main things. Since my focus was American universities, I think it would be great to get more departments on the list from around the globe. If done, I'm not sure how the accreditation boards and the like would mesh together. I'd welcome any discussion about what should or should not go on the list. Otherwise, enjoy!

İstanbul Bilgi University Department of Computer Science is missing. Here you can see it [cs.bilgi.edu.tr] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.233.247.26 (talk) 05:59, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In fact this just shows US universities.... This may need to be augmented by unis from other countries. 79.123.19.179 (talk) 13:44, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This should be split into List of academic computer science departments worldwide & List of academic computer science departments in the US. Waiwai933 (talk) 22:58, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not done – Added a column for country instead, since other editors had been adding worldwide universities. Also, the whole table is now sortable by almost any column, which makes it more flexible than splitting between US and non-US. — Molly-in-md (talk) 22:42, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please add the University of Calgary to this list. The department homepage is http://www.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.146.195.150 (talk) 00:54, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Change name

[edit]

Please change the name to List of academic computer science departments in the U.S. 85.250.203.27 (talk) 10:09, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not done – Editors have been adding worldwide universities, so this request is stale. — Molly-in-md (talk) 22:44, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
