Richmond Park

[edit]

Why is it highlighted in yellow? There needs to be a key explaining this.  — Calvin999 21:38, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The background color indicates that the seat flipped to another party (color corresponds to the party). Because Richmond Park was won by the Lib Dems, its entry in the table is highlighted in yellow. Mélencron (talk) 21:54, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The key is at the top of the page doktorb wordsdeeds 22:10, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

David Amess murder was only a "stabbing attack"?

[edit]

Try islamic terrorism.

Lagan Valley

[edit]

As per the BBC, a by-election is expected in Lagan Valley as the MP Jeffrey Donaldson will be standing in the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election and the UK Govt U-turned on a plan to allow "double jobbing". I'm not certain this is quite nailed on enough to start an article, but I thought I'd give everyone a heads-up. Bondegezou (talk) 09:15, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bonde. Put a redirect on an article, I say, no harm done if it comes to nowt doktorb wordsdeeds 21:05, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'll create 2022 Lagan Valley by-election as a re-direct to Jeffrey Donaldson for now. Bondegezou (talk) 19:48, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Left-wing bias clearly shown in the article

[edit]

Murder of Joe Cox being called "murder" in the article. Murder of David Amess being called "stabbing attack" in the article.

Your biases are disgusting.

46.93.251.79 (talk) 16:52, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We can't prejudge the outcome of the trial, starting next month, and Wikipedia respects the rule of law. Bondegezou (talk) 20:18, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As it has legally been determined to have been murder it is now described as such in the article. This is an encylopedia not a political statement. Marlarkey (talk) 11:01, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Johnson/Dorries/Adams

[edit]

None of these 3 have yet resigned, so there's never going to be a by-election. Wait until they resign and then add them as necessary. SacroHull (talk) 13:47, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst you make a valid claim under WP:CRYSTAL, Wikipedia has something of a By-election Article Rapid Response Unit and as such we've enough sources to prove that resignations are expected rather than merely rumours. doktorb wordsdeeds 14:29, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Something of a "By-election Article Rapid Response Unit" that manages to confirm MPs have resigned before they've resigned?
I don't see how you can prove that something that hasn't happened is expected. SacroHull (talk) 17:21, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Two have now resigned so this discussion is perhaps moot doktorb wordsdeeds 23:53, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
One still hasn't, yet her entry is still in the list. SacroHull (talk) 09:38, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Compete with a date it would seem. I'm happy for Mid Beds to remain on the list FWIW. She's announced she's 'resigning' and the media have reported, if she changes her mind it can easily be removed. Kalamikid (talk) 10:14, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That date needs to go, can't have a writ for a by-election with a sitting MP in place. SacroHull (talk) 10:27, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How would we know she's "changed her mind", it's been a couple of days and she hasn't resigned. SacroHull (talk) 10:30, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
what a stupid question! We'll know if she changes her mind if she announces she's changed her mind. All we have at the moment is her announcement that she's off and the news that Con/Lab/LD etc are taking it seriously enough to select candidates and start campaigning. Kalamikid (talk) 12:18, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Basic rule of Wikipedia is that we follow what reliable sources say. We are following what reliable sources say, so that's good. We shouldn't be second-guessing reliable sources. Bondegezou (talk) 12:26, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So if she doesn't announce it, and doesn't step down, then what?
Parties are always preparing for by-elections and general elections.
Surely the only reliable source is https://www.parliament.uk/business/news/ - anything else is hearsay. SacroHull (talk) 14:57, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, https://www.gov.uk/search/all?organisations[]=hm-treasury&order=updated-newest&parent=hm-treasury is the reliable source. SacroHull (talk) 15:14, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If she doesn't resign in the next few days, as of tonight she still hasn't, the article can be draft-ified until she does. We have third-party and social media sources aplenty to show the timeframe from announcement onwards so it's no biggie. Right now we've got every right to assume she's resigning soon because that's what notable sources tell us. When that changes, the article can change. doktorb wordsdeeds 18:33, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well said Kalamikid (talk) 19:03, 13 June 2023 (UTC) Kalamikid (talk) 19:03, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A reliable source is her on her own Twitter account followed by her giving media interviews saying shes standing down.
Whilst parties do prepare for future elections, they don't prepare for by -elections in every seat. Kalamikid (talk) 19:02, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting flashbacks from the confusion over Gerry Adams' resignation. For obvious reasons he flat out refused to accept a position under the Crown, even one so obviously a legal fiction. That wasn't easy for the media to understand let alone Wikipedia editors! These things often are best not dealt with "in real time". doktorb wordsdeeds 19:43, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Doktorbuk yes, that's another strange one! the media seem awful at this SacroHull (talk) 20:05, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SacroHull, you are wrong to say that the HM Treasury page is the reliable source. Wikipedia is clear that secondary sources are preferred over primary sources, and that's a primary source: see WP:SECONDARY. We go with what (reliable) newspapers and other news media say. Bondegezou (talk) 19:48, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bondegezou apologies, I'm new to this. there can't be secondary sources without a primary source surely? SacroHull (talk) 19:54, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There can't, but secondary sources can interpret and make sense of material from primary sources and do so better than individual Wikipedia editors. Thus, we rely on secondary sources and avoid primary sources and the risk of WP:OR. Bondegezou (talk) 21:09, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
https://www.ft.com/content/61a51531-0b24-480f-99d2-04e7f27bd4ff is this any good? SacroHull (talk) 21:15, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kalamikid an intent to resign doesn't trigger a by-election SacroHull (talk) 20:04, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
An expected resignation is not a vacancy, and hence not a byelection. Marlarkey (talk) 10:41, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable sources are now reporting that Dorries is deliberately delaying her resignation to cause trouble for Sunak. I don't see anything to suggest that she won't resign, just that she's dragging things out. I've edited 2023 Mid Bedfordshire by-election accordingly. Bondegezou (talk) 21:09, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't be surprised if she tries to stick it out until the GE. SacroHull (talk) 22:25, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the entry for Mid Bedfordshire - there is no vacancy and hence no byelection - when there is a vacancy then the entry can be put back in. Marlarkey (talk) 10:41, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dorries by-election

[edit]

I don't think the cause of the by-election is correctly stated- it appears to duplicate the Pincher by-election cause 146.90.212.104 (talk) 11:46, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve fixed that. Bondegezou (talk) 08:59, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Time for a new list?

[edit]

Since the upcoming election will be the first since Brexit and the death of Queen Elizabeth, does anyone think it would be a good idea to close out this list and start a new one with the next Parliament and beyond? 2603:6081:4:5900:1956:FE25:6167:176E (talk) 06:44, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
