Notabilty
[edit]The criteria for inclusion seem to be rather woolly for those players who haven't made 100 appearances. What exactly does "players that have achieved notable success in their football careers" mean? This seems open to abuse and PoV. Surely the list should include only players who were significant in their achievements at Spurs rather than elsewhere. What did Edgar Davids or Frederic Kanoute do at Tottenham that was more significant than countless other players over the years who didn't hang around long enough to rack up 100 games? Notability, a follow up
[edit]There have been a number of recent additions to the list of players comprising those in the current squad. As explained at the top of the article the criteria for inclusion are on grounds of notability and this requires the player to have made at least 100 appearances for the first team unless as referred to above "players that have achieved notable success in their football careers". These should be removed and furthermore I agree with Daemonic Kangaroo that this latter criteria is not NPOV and would suggest that those considered notable be as follows ( criteria borrowed shamelessly from Ipswich Town F.C. Arsenal F.C. and Manchester United F.C.):
- made 100+ first team appearances
- was a founding member of the club in 1882
- represented their country at full International level whilst playing for the club
- has been a club captain at the time the club won a major competition
- hold a club record e.g. signing on fee etc
- hall of fame or club legend (as recorded by THFC on website)
There will always be an argument for exceptions to be included such as those players who fell short of 100 but may be notable in another significant way such as a significant period in club management. This should be only on very exceptional situations and in such cases a footnote and citation must be added enabling others to judge that the reason for inclusion is truly 'notable'.
I would like to propose that after a period to allow for comment / discussion ( propose initially at least minimum 2 weeks period) to allow for comment on the above, that either to use criteria based on the consensus reached re the above suggestions as amended, or as a default if not agreeable to at least apply rigidly the current criteria and remove players falling outside whatever the criteria adopted. Thoughts please! Tmol42 (talk) 13:35, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
I totally agree with these criteria as it clears up what is meant somewhat. I also agree with Daemonic Kangaroo in that the criteria at the moment is somewhat vague and is left open to other people's point of view.Obiwanskywalker (talk) 13:59, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- As proposed above I have uploaded a revised list which adds in those players missing from the previous list including other players who meet the more clearly defined criteria and deleted entries where players ( typically the current squad who have not yet achieved the notability test) as set out above and on the page. References and sources of the data have been added. In a small number of cases eg. Welsh and Argentinean Internationals I have not yet found the number of caps whilst on the books. If anyone has access to these please update. There are also some players who played before 1908 whose records I did not have to hand so these need adding in. Sources for the data sometime conflict and I have tried to go with the most reliable. But no doubt some ( maybe quite a few!) errors have crept in and I would welcome corrections as well as any comment here on the content. Tmol42 (talk) 12:22, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
The notability criteria is a joke as it stands. Chris Gunter, who has barely featured for the club and is a young recently capped international in a third rate international team, is considered "notable", while for example Jonathan Woodgate, a veteran England international who played an important part in the recent Carling Cup victory, is not considered notable. Likewise the inclusion of Grzegorz Rasiak is a complete joke. 89.27.55.173 (talk) 21:03, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Your comments don't really deserve a reply due to incivility but for the record the criteria are based on those on notability as set out in Wikipedia:WikiProject Football and separate discussions on the Talk pages of the project which although not reaching a consensus suggested that the 100 appearance criteria was either pragmatic or too limiting hence the addition of those making international appearances or significant notability otherwise to try and strike a balance. Your comment re Woodgate is redundant given he had been already announced he was in the line up and about to make his first appearance for England since joing TH about 90 minutes afterwards. Players to be added.
[edit]What about Eddie Clayton? He played for Spurs between 1958 and 1967 and had just over 100 appearances according to the A-Z of Players on the club website. But he he appears to be a missing man on the internet. He doesn't have a Wikipedia page, while another player with one appearance as a substitute does. I would try myself but can't find anything substantial with google. Can anyone help with this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.19.151 (talk) 16:09, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Very difficult one, I have added him to the player list 5 years late, and have also created a Wikipedia article for him. Wonder why there appears to be so little information. The guy played in the cup winners cup as well as being a player in a generally successful period. Good sources are few for him but that is no reason for a layer of his significance to go without an article. Veryirregularuser (talk) 19:56, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
I'm not too sure that I agree with the criteria for a player to be added, so I'll just throw a name out there and let the community decide - Jose Dominguez. He played from 1997 to 2000. Other than his propensity to trip over the ball (I'm sure the ball was taller than him!), he was quite good entertainment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jerseyman8 (talk • contribs) 09:17, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Jose Dominguez, has less than 100 appearances for Tottenham and didn't get an international appearance while at Tottenham, so shouldn't be included. I believe that the criteria is fairly liberal, you have to set a limit somewhere and he doesn't hit that limit. Veryirregularuser (talk) 01:00, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
How about Jake Livermore? 58 appearances and 1 England cap whilst at Spurs.
Jake Livermore should indeed be on here, feel free to add. If not I will add later.

Players to be removed.
[edit]I think some of them are not needed, didn't make enough of a contributions.
- Gheorghe Popescu
- Ilie Dumitrescu
- Gerard McMahon
- Paul McVeigh
- Espen Baardsen
- Moussa Saib
- Gary Doherty
- Jonathan Blondel
- Jamie Redknapp
- Hélder Postiga
- Mbulelo Mabizela
- Thimothee Atouba
- Erik Edman
- Noureddine Naybet
- Reto Ziegler
- Grzegorz Rasiak
- Andy Reid
- Edgar Davids
They are all fail to have 100 appearances, can we remove them please? Govvy (talk) 20:19, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- As discussed over on the Talk:Tottenham Hotspur F.C. Page a tidy up of the notable players both there and here is in order. On your list the only one I would query would be Gary Doherty who sticks out against the others with less than 50 appearances. He had turned out over 70 times for the club. Drawing the line there would bring into question a further large list of players with no claim to greater merit. Should we take out all others with <50 appearances unless they have a historic or other notable characteristic? Another one on your list I have no particular claim for is Jamie Redknapp who we know did have a short, injury plagued period as 1st team Captain. In retrospect I would have liked to have added a criteria to make the list based on 'former players' until they get to 100 or 50(?) appearances thereby removing current players who are well represented elsewhere. So can I add that suggestion into the mix?
- The related issue is should we at the same time go ahead and remove the notable former players list on the Main Page as already discussed on the THFC page and link to this page when cleaned up or would this upset the Peer Review of the article which I thought was in train/ imminent? Tmol42 (talk) 10:05, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- I guess we could do a vote on removing the former players of note list on the main page. As for the criteria for this list, it should stick to more over 100 games if you ask me. Govvy (talk) 14:33, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- I've refreshed the pages generally as per discussion created a baseline of 50+ where they have represented the club Internationally whilst on the books not sure this is truly notability but see how others feel about this. Does anyone have a good source for Club Captains ( Jamie Redknapp) will stay in on this basis I think. I guess Luka Modrić will be eligible on his record-equalling signing on fee once he debuts? Steve Perryman
[edit]Does anyone have a picture of Steve Perryman we can add to this article? Govvy (talk) 13:06, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Tottenham Hotspur Greats
[edit]Not sure on what criteria some of the players are listed as great. The list at the official Spurs website is no longer there - the last one I can find is archived from 2012 - [1], and it doesn't list some of the names here (Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe). I have added a few who have been inducted into the club's Hall of Fame, that seems to be a reasonable criterion to be considered one of the Greats. Hzh (talk) 12:54, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
