Margita Bangova's article addition
[edit]After I removed this article from this list, because she is not a famous Romani person, Psychonaut readded it without giving a proper explanation. Namely, how is she and her bigraphy significant for this page? Among the Romani people she is just a common person that certainly does not deserve a wiki article, (in fact currently is developing a request for deletion where I contend that it is just an anti-Romani propaganda, selecting negative things about Roma, the same as The Eternal Jew was in other times). Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 08:53, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- This article lists Roma people with Wikipedia articles. Bangová is Roma. Therefore Bangová is listed here. Please confine the debate on her notability to one place at a time (currently, the AfD). —Psychonaut 11:17, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- And what is your authority to decide that this list comprise any unheard Romani person? Just because you want it? This is active "Gypsy" image creation. Wait for a debate, a consensus, don't put unilateraly what you imagine (especially when you consider yourself as an expert in wiki editing). The list is long time established to comprise only representative Romani persons. Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 11:32, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Bangová was in this list for years until you removed her entry two days ago. If anyone should be waiting for a debate or consensus before changing the article, I think it's you. Unless or until Bangová's article is deleted, there is no policy-supported reason for her not to be in this list. —Psychonaut 15:32, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Who's me to be judged as a standard of time? I just did not notice it, until I organized the Category:Romani people into more focused subcats. You failed to answer how Bangova is representative for the Romani people, why should her name be in this list. The only conclusion is that this is anti-Romani propaganda, active enforcement of stereotypes. Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 17:03, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- This is not a list of individuals representative of the Romani people. If you wish, you may start an article on that topic, though I don't see how it will avoid POV issues. And please stop insisting that editors answer irrelevant questions. Keep your objections grounded in policy. —Psychonaut 12:45, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Move?!
[edit]Wait a minute, this does not look fair at all. No one supported Burgas00's initiative to move this page from "List of famous Roma, Sinti and Mixed People" to "List of famous Roma and Sinti." What right did he have to move the page?
There are many famous people who have some Romani heritage but also have other heritage. That is, there are celebrities with Romani heritage who do not consider themselves Romani (or are otherwise not to be identified as simply Romani). We Are the Romani People by the Romani scholar Prof. Ian Hancock is one source for this (you may find one example from the book on Talk:Ian Hancock in which Prof. Hancock explains how former President Bill Clinton is part Romani). --Kuaichik 04:30, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I moved this because "mixed people" is not an ethnicity. The Roma are an ethnic group (or a collection of ethnic groups) with a common ancestry (from Northwestern India), culture, identity and language/languages. It does not cover random celebrities who claim or of whom it is claimed their great grandmother was "a gypsy". It does not cover new age hippies and pop stars nor "Irish travellers".
By the way, if a particular individual is white, he is most likely NOT Roma. Roma are generally Indian-looking.--Burgas00 17:11, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- Kiss-me-my-hedgehog, guy, I'm Romny and I'm naturally blonde, and I know tons of Roma who has "euro" face. We left India 1000 years ago, we couldn't stay the same during our long journey. I can show you my pic, and pix of other Roma too. RomanyChaj —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 20:42, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Generally those Rom who are "nordic"-looking or "white" are so mixed they have little Roma ancestry. I understand this is the case of the Romnichal of the British Isles and "Sintis" of other countries in northern europe. For all I know, I may have more Romani ancestry than they do! In any case they constitute a tiny minority of Europe's Gypsy population.
The Rom of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Turkey etc.. (i.e. the vast majority) are predominantly Indian looking. There are exceptions, but then again there are blonde people in Pakistan aswell. --Burgas00 23:01, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- If you're not Rom, let Roma decide who's Rom enough and who's not, OK? -- RomanyChaj
Thats difficult since a large % of Roma do not even consider themselves Roma, particularly in the Balkan region. Some use alternative labels such as "Egyptian", or simply the ethnic label of their nationality or language. This explains the low levels of ethnic Roma in certain national census. And it seems that certain websites used as sources on this article attribute Roma ethnicity to people who have no connection whatsoever with this ethnic group, such as Pablo Picasso.
Picasso was not a gypsy, but you know something. The maternal grandfather of Pablo Picasso was a Gypsy.therefore appeared on that list —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.126.111.3 (talk) 10:25, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
When you invite me to kiss your hedgehog am I correct to assume that you are referring to your genitalia?
--Burgas00 16:54, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not kiss my hedgehog, but kiss me [you] my hedgehog, that's a phrase from an anecdote, originally soends as "f**k me my hedgehog" RomanyChaj
Those people *** my mind
[edit]Let us stop that war They don't want to know all the truth, they want to see only painted gypsies - ok, i'm tired of it. RomanyChaj —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 14:34, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
We are not the only ones to have problems with Burgas00, you people will never get the whole idea, that is why with all your university studies and Wikipedia Romani sites, None of the you will EVER get a full grasp of the language and culture. By the way, Django Reinahrdt was a SINTI not Romani, so your stupid classifications in which you reverted the most logical version have failed again.Go ahead make the list, you people seem to know more about us than we do!
and I dont know why this page needed to be changed, The only one who had a problem with it was Burgas00, and he seems to piss people off on various articles by reverting (vandalizing), whole articles. So $%%^ this list,*&^% Burgas00, and #%^* I hope you people chase your tails forever, because you will never know the language and our people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.58.8.14 (talk) 21:49, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

list fixed
[edit]the list problem I fixed. Now there can be no questions asked. This list is also ideal because you get the basic list in the index part as well as not a run on list in the page itself, and there is no controvery over the lawyering of "list" tags. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RYNORT (talk • contribs) 17:56, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Serious Cleanup
[edit]This article is in need of serious cleanup. I have just standardized the format, but I hope to eventually A. include nationality and birth/death dates for all listed persons, B. Alphabetize sections be either first or last name, and C. remove all redlinks, assuming nobody plans on writing their biography soon. This is both to allow easy reading, and to comply with the same standards other ethnic lists seem to keep. Feel free to help. The Myotis (talk) 01:51, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with this assessment. Further, unless an individual is included in at least one Romani category on his/her article page, they should be removed from this list. RashersTierney (talk) 13:21, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Will begin cleanup today as outlined unless objections suggested. RashersTierney (talk) 08:48, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Why are these people on the Talk page and not in the article? Are you still trying to decide if they are Roma? Or are they all mixed people and don't count? If so, why not add a section to the article for People of Roma heritage? The list is for "People of Roma heritage",mixed people. The list above it is "List of Roma People", there is a difference.

Article name
[edit]Where on this article's talk page was there ever a consensus reached on the move from "Romani" to "Rroma"? Just wondering. —Zalktis (talk) 11:14, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Nobody asks, and I seems that the only changes in which are not reverted are non-Rroma, and when Roma want to include people of who are not fully Roma it gets reverted again and again. but so what? In the articles about the Rroma people on wikipedia there is very little in which the outside world is in tune with. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.187.154.33 (talk) 15:27, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Please correct the introduction of the article => it says 'Roma' -> it should say 'Rroma' => nothing to do with the ancient city of Rome/Latin culture.. thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mblgta (talk • contribs) 22:20, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Cleaning up this article
[edit]This article is a mess. I have been trying to fix it up for a couple of days. I'm not going to decide who is or isnt Roma but please check your sources. Some of these "lists of Romani people" pages circulating on the internet are NOT reliable. Also, if someone has (or claims) Romani descent because "he/she thinks her grandmother may have had gypsy blood", explain this on the entry, or just delete it.
In many European countries being called a gypsy is sadly still quite offensive so its not a good idea to randomly start labelling people as Romani without it being clear that they belong to this ethnic group and culture. It is also quite damaging to the Romani people and identity to have random celebrities jumping onto the bandwagon of Romani ethnicity without any valid justification.
This reminds me of the millions of white americans who claim they have Cherokee blood (the myth of the cherokee princess). Should they all be included in a list of native american indians???? --81.32.251.116 (talk • contribs) 21:16, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Tyson Fury is Irish Traveler and not Romani.
[edit]As much as I like him and he is a great boxer, he is still not of the same blood as me (I am of Romani blood).
The Fury's are an Irish Traveler (Pavee) family and not a Romani one.
Irish Travelers (Pavee) speak Gammin which is an Irish Gaelic originating language and they originate from Ireland. Whereas Romani speak Romani which is an Indian originating language and they origin from India.
Other Irish Traveler (Pavee) families are the Cash, Rooney (Wayne Rooney - footballer & Dan Rooney - bare knuckle boxer), Doherty (Paddy Doherty - bare knuckle boxer & TV celebrity), Ward (Shayne Ward - singer), McGinley, McDonagh, Joyce, Nevin
None of the Irish traveler families are Romani. They are a different ethnic group completely

Pyotr Leshchenko - no references proving that he was of Romani origin
[edit]Pyotr Leshchenko is listed here as a person of Romani origin, but neither English, nor Russian articles about him have any references for that. He was born in Romania, and he performed Gypsy music, but there's nothing about his origins. If he was indeed Romani, is there a way to reference it properly?
