Talk:List of Psittaciformes by population
Have you included captive parrots in the numbers?
[edit]Q as topic. From a quick glance thought the list, it looks as though sometimes you've mentioned captive populations and other times not. Shouldn't it be either one way or the other? I know that some of the species with fairly low numbers on your list are prolific breeders in captivity and are fairly common as companion parrots... --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 23:50, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes the IUCN (or more technically, BirdLife International) only covers wild numbers and that's the only source I've used so far. The list will hopefully include captive numbers eventually, as well, just as Galliformes will include the chicken, Carnivorans includes the domestic dog, etc. Are there any counts yet? I'd like to write "xxx in the wild, xxx captive" in the notes sections for those birds. If not I guess I just need to write in the lead that it's only wild populations that are counted.
- Out of all the lists I've made so far, this one would surely be affected the most by captive numbers. I definitely want to get started on that quickly. PhnomPencil (✉) 15:56, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- In the past, in relation to something else, I tried looking for a list sorted by species - but this was the only info I was able to find online that even touched on it - and it's not specific enough and is only for the USA anyway. If any such detailed info does exist (there may never have even been a detailed count by species), I'd guess that you might find it in here or here, but again only for the USA. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 17:13, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Oh thanks so much! Will look into those... who knows maybe CITES has some info. As you know most other pets are sorted by breed only, fortunately (well except for fish but that will never be listed... some reptiles too I guess... ho hum). These lists are buds. Yeah, odd to see the Scarlet Macaw listed where it is. PhnomPencil (✉) 18:28, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- There might also be someone at WP:BIRDS who has access to a research library, or to paywalled stuff. I'll ask on the project talkpage... --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 20:48, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
