Fair use rationale for Image:Prim Doctor.jpg

Image:Prim Doctor.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Um I didn't mean THIS minor

I meant for this to be more along the lines of List of Torchwood minor characters, listing important one episode characters (e.g. Ben) and minor recurrers like Tom & Duncan, not people who appear on screen for about 30 seconds who then get eaten! --GracieLizzie (talk) 01:20, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Define important. Because Ben was not that important either, after he gets Abby to meet Rex his contribution to the script is over and only deus ex machina kept him in the story. In fact the only minor characters who actualy do something (and are also, coincidenty, the ones to make more than one appearance) are Tom, Duncan, Dr Lewis and Tim Parker. Nubula (talk) 14:42, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
I thought Ben being Rex's original owner was important but if common consensus is against that then so be it. --GracieLizzie (talk) 22:53, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Season 2 minors

I do not have access to any season two episodes, and have not seen them, so I was hoping some of you who have would add on characters like Valerie and the mysterious cleaner who gets killed twice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cuddly Panda (talkcontribs) 09:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

While I think the mysterious cleaner/Oviver Leek's employee needs to be added to this article, I am not sure whether Valerie should be added or not. Scottie Too Hottie7 (talk) 21:50, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
So long as they appear through a majority from the episode and are quite important to the plot, yes. These include Valerie, Lucien and the girl through the anomaly in the 11th episode. - Cuddly Panda (logged out) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.53.248.221 (talk) 09:39, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Species?

All characters on this page have a section for "species." Seeing as they're all human, I don't see how this makes sense. The only non-human animal that may be considered a character in the series is Rex,and he isn't even on the list. Pyromania152 22:21, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Merger proposal

Looking over the articles created for peripheral and even central characters of this series, I am seeing a lot of conjecture and original research. Those which include citations often simply cite the episodes themselves, and the character history sections are not very well-constructed. I propose that the existing character articles be merged with this one in the same style shown in List of characters in the Firefly universe; rather than listing all characters alphabetically, listing first major characters and then more minor characters in a second section below. ~ S0CO(talk|contribs) 04:16, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Disputes not withstanding, the indiscriminate use of fair use images in list articles such as this one is not supported. For the supporting policy, see WP:NFCC. Superior strength?

Where is it mentioned or alluded to that Caroline had significantly superior strength than Abby? It's true that she pinned Abby at one point, but it wasn't long before she was rolled over, was she? It looked like a very close fight, nothing really claims that either was particularly stronger than the other. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.121.124.49 (talk) 02:00, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Original research

There is a disturbing amount of original research in this article at times. Wikipedia:Verifiability requires that all content must be verifiable. Anything added must be attributable to reliable sources. Assumptions, based on what a person thinks they see on TV constitute original research and can not be included in articles. If the same conclusion is subsequently published by a reliable secondary source, then it becomes verifiable, and doesn't constitute original research. Television episodes constitute primary sources. All interpretive claims, analyses, or synthetic claims about primary sources must be referenced to a secondary source, rather than original analysis of the primary-source material by Wikipedia editors. We can only put into an article exactly what occurs in an episode. We cannot interpret what occurs and add that. In the case of Ethan Dobrowski, these edits are based on an interpretive analysis of what actually occurred. Ethan may have heard a voice that said "Help your brother", but it was not stated, or otherwise shown that he has a family in the present day so that claim can not be made without resorting to original research. Ethan came from another time so who's to say that the disembodied voice wasn't from another time, and how much credibility can we give a disembodied voice anyhow? The simple fact is that we don't know and for now, any claim that he has a family anywhere is not verifiable. Therefore it can't be in the article. As for Gideon, this suffers from the same problem as the edits for Ethan Dobrowski. The flashback contained only a view of an alien looking landscape with no dialogue. At no time was a birth involved, it did not identify that it was from the future or show anything even distantly related to an anomaly. This is clearly original research, and can't be in the article. --AussieLegend (talk) 19:16, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Okay, let's just delete the whole page then. If you cant take the ACTUAL THINGS SEEN AND WORDS SPOKEN IN THE SHOW as evidence, absolutely nothing on it is supported to the extent that you demand. There aren't any reliable secondary sources for this show that that give more than brief and often misleading summaries. I did not insert original research, guesses or weakly supported "assumptions". Not even things that are "signposted", like Ethan being Danny's brother. This is a fictional drama. The way the writers communicate facts of the plot is not by having a narrator read you a memo. It's by showing you what the character is seeing and thinking. Barsoomian (talk) 04:42, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
For the purposes of what happens to a character in a show/book/radio program/whatever, primary sources are perfectly acceptable to use. Interpretations of the character, inspiration, development (in the sense of creation, not growth) are where secondary sources are needed. Saying that Gideon saw his home in an apocalyptic future before he died would be original research; on the other hand, saying that what he saw was a castle wreathed in flames (if that is what it is; hasn't aired in Canada yet) would be fine. A copyedit is probably all that is needed to clear up any original research problems that may exist. Melicans (talk, contributions) 05:33, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I'll redo it like that then, though to add all the caveats to avoid any suggestion of impropriety will make it three times longer and read like a legal brief. Barsoomian (talk) 06:08, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Fictional characters ??

Many of the bios begin "XX is a fictional character in the ITV sci-fi drama Primeval". I don't think this is at all necessary; EVERYONE is a "fictional character in the ITV sci-fi drama Primeval" as is stated in intro to the page. It's unnecessarily pedantic to include this on each bio. I won't delete them all without consensus, but I certainly won't insert any or restore them if someone else does. Barsoomian (talk) 05:01, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Much of the content here has been copied from the individual character articles that are now redirected here. Obviously it wasn't cleaned up. feel free to do so. --AussieLegend (talk) 05:05, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

General Note

Look. This and the other Primeval entries show a lot of work and dedication, but really doesn't all this actually belong on a fan site like Memory Alpha rather than in Wikipedia? -- Craig Goodrich 68.58.132.176 (talk) 00:10, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

clear tags

The clear tag adds no linebreaks to the display. Putting them after every character section made the coding consistent and simple and doesn't require anyone to manually add them at a later stage, and many editors might not be aware of them. Saving a few bytes of text not worth worrying about whether each one is "necessary" or not. Barsoomian (talk) 09:07, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

However, they're completely unnecessary and don't serve any useful purpose. Adding unnecessary code to the page doesn't simplify anything, it just adds unnecessary complexity and other editors may be confused as to why they are in the article. There are a lot of things that editors aren't aware of. That isn't justification for adding them to the article. --AussieLegend (talk) 09:25, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
They're not "completely unnecessary". They may be for you, they may not be for someone with different screen settings (say wide screen and small fonts). If an infobox is added, or expanded, or the text is added or cut, they may become "necessary" or "unnecessary". The point is, if they're unnecessary, they are effectively no-ops. It simplifies editing if you just have them at the end of every section rather than having to work out if they're "necessary" and add or delete them. There are loads of much more complex formatting. Mostly editors just leave alone what they don't understand. They're more likely to wonder why some sections have them and others don't and either add or delete them inappropriately; or worse, use some silly hack (say a sequence of linebreak codes) to get the same effect. Barsoomian (talk) 12:00, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm using a widescreen monitor and they ARE completely unnecessary. If an infobox is added in the future they may become necessary then, but that's the time to add them, not now. Adding unnecessary code to a page just in case it might be used at some unspecified time in the future is never good practice. We don't do it to content, that's covered by WP:CRYSTAL, so why should we do it to content we can't see? --AussieLegend (talk) 22:51, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
There is a load of redundant code that could be stripped from every page, (e.g., all the empty entries in infoboxes) but it's left there as it makes maintenance, additions and updates easier. That's not "crystal", it is good practice. But if you're going to make a big deal about it, do it your way. Enjoy deleting and replacing tags as "necessary". The important thing is you can save 9 bytes. Whoopee. Barsoomian (talk) 04:39, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Leaving unused fields in already existing infoboxes is far different to deliberately adding code for which there is no immediate, or even a short-long term use. Ask any software engineer and he or she will tell you that it isn't good practice, despite your assertion to the contrary. The amount of code is not 9 bytes, it's 220 for all of the tags you added.[1] Back when I started writing code, long before "Software Engineers" even existed, 220 bytes was 86% of available memory on the first computer I built. That's not important though since the amount of code isn't a factor in my opposition. As for making a 'big deal about it", I'm not the one who restored the unnecessary code after it was removed,[2] and created an entire thread about it. Your contributions to this thread, up to your last post, were twice mine so if there is anyone making a big deal, it's not me. --AussieLegend (talk) 08:17, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I meant 9 bytes per tag (maybe 18 if it's Unicode). But we both know that, so you're just point scoring. The only reason this thread exists, wasting my time and Wikipedia's resources, is because you made it an issue. I suppose you would have preferred I just revert with no discussion so you could complain about me. There are millions of pages with actual errors you could be correcting, but you have to immediately revert my edits, for a result that you find philosophically valid but makes no difference in practice. And I used to code FORTRAN on punchcards. The world is different now and squeezing a few bytes of code at the cost of programmers' time isn't considered smart. But go ahead and revert it if it makes you feel better. That's the only good it will do. Barsoomian (talk) 09:00, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I only removed the clear tags because they are unnecessary. You really need to learn to not take things so personally. Punchcards were for wimps. Straight machine code all the way, via switches. --AussieLegend (talk) 09:39, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Lead image size

As I indicated in this edit, MOS:IMAGES says that lead images should usually be no wider than "300px". There are many reasons for this, one of which is that not everyone uses a widescreen monitor. Many people still use smaller monitors and, despite what we would have expected, this is not becoming less common because people are relying more on more on portable devices, like smartphones. It simply isn't necessary to have a wide lead image just so people can see characters more clearly, as this edit implies is necessary. The default thumbnail size is 220px, this is what most images default to. Infobox images are generally larger but the entire infobox is generally only 300px wide and the lead image is set to between 220 and 270px. Without an infobox we can set the image to the "full" 300px width but beyond that, the screen becomes squashed on the smaller monitors that MOS says we need to cater for. We don't need to ensure that all details in an image are necessary, in most cases it doesn't happen anyway. If somebody wants to see all of the detail, they can simply click on the image. That is why we have that functionality. --AussieLegend (talk) 12:07, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Does anyone have a monitor that can't display a 400 pixel image comfortably? Get serious. My PC has an old, relatively small monitor. 17", not widescreen, 1280x1024. I've got a 12" laptop and that's 1024x768. No problem on either. I don't know and don't really care what it looks like on a phone, I suspect they will resize automatically, since phones have to deal with pages designed for widescreen. The point is, there are SIX faces in that ONE image. It's much better to make the text column a bit narrower for a few lines (still more than half the screen for anyone in reality, not your imaginary low-res smart phone ) and get a slightly more legible view of the faces. And the faces are the WHOLE POINT of having the image, it's not a decoration. And again, the MOS you cite does not give a hard limit for "lead images", it just says "usually". And so we can use our judgement, which I recommend you do. FYI, I just set my monitor at VGA res, 640x480. The image then took up the entire column at 400 pixels, with the text below. Which was not a problem. If it had been 300, there would have been an ugly, very narrow column of a word or two each line. So it works quite well. At that resolution the rest of the page looks like crap no matter what image size you choose. anyway. Barsoomian (talk) 12:37, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
It's not just the 400px image that has to be catered for, it's everything on the screen including the Wikipedia menu on the left, the prose, TOC and browser items, such as the scroll bar, all of which take up real estate. With a 400px image the first line of text is only "This is a list of characters in the ITV". All readers, including those who are vision impaired need to be catered for. That's why we have to compromise by using thumbnails instead of full-size images. --AussieLegend (talk) 13:30, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
PS looking again at the MOS you cite "An image should generally be no more than 500 pixels tall and 400 pixels ("upright=1.8") wide". So more than 400 might be a problem. I set it at 400. Barsoomian (talk)
And PPS: I see the lousy12 KB image you just put up. As you like to say, WP:POINT. At least update the damn caption, which is now completely wrong. Barsoomian (talk)
I don't like to say that at all. These are non-free images and they have to comply with our non-free content policy. WP:NFCC#3b requires low resolution images. The season 3 image was too large. Most non-free images are 300px or less. --AussieLegend (talk) 13:30, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Your new image is such lousy quality it doesn't matter what size it is. Well done. Probably better to reduce it to 200 pixels. Or 100. Barsoomian (talk) 16:17, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
