development of Minnesota, other state tables
[edit]An editor has passed by to suggest a complaint in an edit summary, about this list in development. However, the editor was unaware of what work-in-progress really is going on here, which involves building out state-specific tables from NRHP items that are hidden in a big comment. So I think the editor assumed incorrectly that a couple Minnesota items were going to be left out, when that was not going to happen. If the editor actually really wants to help develop out the Minnesota or other states' tables, please do, but please note the hidden comment and how the work has been going. I'll continue, anyhow. --doncram 04:58, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
List denomination?
[edit]"Presbyterian" is pretty broad; What do First Presbyterian Church (Birmingham, Alabama) and Briarwood Presbyterian Church have in common anyway, apart from having "Presbyterian" in their name? And Auburn University Chapel doesn't even have that; in fact, it's not even a church any more. So I wonder (a) whether this list is all that well defined, and (b) if this is really a list of churches, whether we should list the denomination, which is presumably (in most case) more significant that architectural style. StAnselm (talk) 18:25, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
- See Presbyterianism, John Knox, and the Westminster Confession. I'd guess those are common among almost all churches that call themselves Presbyterian. I am not an expert, and only barely know of the different divisions, but think that all almost all Protestant and even the Roman Catholic church have some divisions (e.g. different types of Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, Quaker; or Ukrainian Catholic) so it makes sense to gloss over some divisions in a list like this. @Nyttend: who might know more about this than I do. Smallbones(smalltalk) 03:35, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- The problem is that this list, like several others (e.g. List of Methodist churches in the United States) were created as a dump of most or all entries from the National Register of Historic Places database that included "Presbyterian" in the name, including non-churches such as Reformed Presbyterian Church Parsonage in New York; the corresponding process at List of Catholic churches in the United States produced a rather...unprofessional section of nonchurches, which you can find by looking for the text "NRHP-listed notable Catholic". Presumably a few additional churches have been added since creation, but this is still basically "List of Presbyterian church buildings with National Register of Historic Places designation"; that's why the architectural style is included, and why the building date and NR listing date are included (those data are available from the NR database), and why fundamentally more important things like denomination and organization date aren't included. We could make the list marginally more useful by adding the denomination, but this and similar lists for other churches by faith are so broad in their scope that they're really not useful; nobody's going to go looking for an individual church by checking this list. Nyttend (talk) 03:55, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- For further evidence on the names, check (1) the ARPC churches on the list; you'll see two "Associated Reformed" locations, because the NR database makes such a typo; and (2) find me the NR-listed Stafford Reformed Presbyterian Church, which got on the NR in 2005; but wait, it's not on there, because the list's creator again just used the names and didn't realise that "Convenenter" was a typo for "Covenanter", which would mean a kind of Presbyterian.
