Pokémon names in the Japanese title translations

Should the titles be along the lines of "Enter the Zenigame Corps!", or "Enter the Squirtle Corps!"? Should Pokémon names in the translations of the Japanese titles (not the Rōmaji) be translated into their English forms? I say yes: just as the word gundan translates directly to "corps", and tōjō translates directly to "entry", Zenigame translates directly, in a one-to-one correspondence, to "Squirtle". Names of characters and places shouldn't be changed to their English equivalents (Satoshi does not directly translate to "Ash", for example, as not all people named Satoshi in Japanese are named Ash in English), but Pokémon names, because they aren't technically proper nouns, and are directly translatable, should be translated. Plus, it would add to potential readers' understanding of the episode's content (by allowing them to understand which Pokémon is featured in the episode - something that the English titles often do not mention) without adding synopses or summaries. This way, those episodes which contain the Pokémon's name only in the Japanese title, such as "Erika to Kusaihana" ("Erika and Gloom" translated, "Pokémon Scent-sation!" in English) will feature both the Japanese and the English names in this list. Template:List of Anime Ep TV-Pokemon

I want to employ the table structure visible at List of Oh My Goddess episodes here. I normaly work alone with lists when structuring/restructuring but I do not want to do this alone here for perhaps obvious reasons...

The "English translation" row would need to be ditched (as it is only trivia) and air dates should be introduced.

I can machine translate existing structure to be compatible with Template:List of Anime Ep TV-Pokemon but airdates and short episode descriptions should be manualy added.

I do agree that the English translation would be removed since they can reffer to fan sites and not to mention that there are 3 rows for Japanese title and just 1 for English title. People viewing in 800X600 would have difficulty viewing since the collums are narrow at that size due to the lengthy japanese titles. --fnfd 06:32, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I completely object to the removal of the English Translation. en.Wikipedia.org is an English site, and placement of foreign languages should accompanied with translation. The Japanese titles are important, as these were the original names, and its translation, although unofficial, should be included. The vast majority of people who visit this page cannot read Japanese and would be interested in how much the Japanese title differs from the English title. Besides, someone placed a lot of effort to have the translations here, and I for one appreciate his/her efforts. ICEBreaker 08:14, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm aware of that. But each volume is made up of only 3 to 6 episodes and they only go up to season 6. I'm reffering to a boxset for each entire season and movie. --fnfd 07:45, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Episode numberings for season 1

Recently, people have been switching the english numbering for "Pokémon, I Choose You!" with "Battle Aboard the St. Anne". The source given is [1] It stated that the st anne ep was aired first, but it did not state which broadcaster aired it. However, the site itself and other TV broadcasters that aired the english version of pokemon indicated that the episode "Pokémon, I Choose You!" came first. The St. Anne aired first in some areas (perhaps as a sneak preview of the series), although Pokémon, I Choose You! is the first episode of the series. kelvSYC 04:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Understood, but what is important is the sequence of the story line, not the sequence of the broadcast. Besides, many countries broadcast programmes out of sequence based on their own reasons. This does not mean episodes are automatically renumbered. ICEBreaker 08:17, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

The answer is a flat-out no. There are at least three different Pokémon dubs (China, HK, and Taiwan), each with their own different translation for the name of the series as well as the names of individual episodes. Caps in episode name

In the anime some episodes such as showdown in pewter city, the title is fully capital letters (SHOWDOWN IN PEWTER CITY). Should we change th names? Ragnaroknike 06:28, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

There are indeed inconsistencies, especially in the earlier seasons. I've corrected the names to the way they are displayed in the Anime itself, as it is the official title. ICEBreaker 08:23, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Protection of Spin-off Series

I believe it was SpigotMap who deleted several sections of Pokemon spin-off series. I would presume the reason for the deletion is that some of those series were not aired in the US. Perhaps I am mistaken, but this Wiki is about the Pokemon Anime in general, and is not specific to any one country. As such, US airings are of little consequence, except as information only. Someone obviously spent a lot of effort to contribute the list of spin-off episodes, information which I find to be useful. It is shameful for anyone to take it upon himself to remove all that work with a few clicks of the mouse, before any consensus on this issue was reached. ICEBreaker 14:36, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

First Episode

What proof is there that the Battle of St Anne was not the first episode to be aired in the US? SpigotMap 22:06, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

PLEASE use a bit of common sense! It does not matter which episode was aired first. The airing dates are arbitrary, and is a result of decisions of the broadcaster, or a technical mistake. The episode sequence is defined by the producer not the broadcaster. "Pokemon, I Choose You" is obviously the first episode. Besides, who made the US (i.e. WB) the authority on this matter? How about other countries like Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia? Other countries did not air Pokemon episodes out of sequence. We should adhere to the original Japanese sequence, and add first broadcast dates if it is felt truly necessary. Based on audience size, I think US dates would be appropriate. Episode Numbering According to Production / Plot Sequence vs Airing Sequence

The page to the incorrect numbers. the numbers are from http://www.pokemon.com/#tvmovies (the official pokemon website of America) and the site says that my verison is correct. KidsWB are not offical, they missed up and aired the episodes not in order.

WE SHOULD AND ONLY USE THE EPISODE NUMBERS FROM THE OFFICAL POKEMON SITE (http://www.pokemon.com/#tvmovies). Also accourding to http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ all of the titles from Kanto --> Johto DO NOT HAVE KANJI in there titles, so the japanese titles from episode 1-276 are incorrect so we MOST change them to their OFFICAL JAPANESE--(http://www.pokemon.co.jp/anime/tv/pokemon.html)

It would make sense to not use the the kanji. This show's demographic is kids, and theres a chance that the offical titles did not use kanji because Japanese children do not know them yet. according to this kanji list, 決 is learned my the third year in school, so they would be around 8-9. However the target demographic can be around 5-13. (I was a part of that generation when Pokemon was coming about. I was like 6.) So, a 5 year old Japanese kid would not know 決. 君 is also learned by third year, and 対 to. They were being considerate for those who do not know the kanji.

Clarity vs. accuracy? For the episode which orginally did not have kanji, add no kanji. Wikipedia is to have accurate info yes?

Now episode list....I have no clue...the person did provided sources. On the other hand, this is the English Wikipedia so should be in order of air date..........I really dont know....

They were shut down because they have been doing this for 2-3 days now. Consensus, although not extremely clear, has been to use air dates, which makes sense. Why use official numbering of episodes if they weren't aired in that order? SpigotMap 02:04, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Actually, what is the problem here? If I am not mistaken, the current order of the episodes are in production sequence, as per the official website. This is listed in the JP# column. On the column next to it is the US airing sequence (EN#), provided as information only. Airing in other countries are not listed, as the first English airing was in US. Airing of other languages are not included because that would be too much information. I think we have a good compromise. The order MUST be in the original Japanese order, but it's fine to have US airing sequences in the second column. So what's the issue? ICEBreaker 07:46, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Can we please settle this SOON? Who is the person who keeps changing the E# episode numbers? There seems to be no discussion going on at all. I want this page to be unprotected, as I want to start making corrections to some of the minor mistakes in the episode titles. And who requested protection in the first place? The list is missing English #162 so it's thrown the entire numbering off by one for the rest of the series. The show is in 52-episode seasons, so "Machoke Machoke Man" should be 208, not 209, "You're a Star, Lavitar" should be 260, not 261, "Watt's With Watson" should be 312, not 313, and so on. Even though the show is grouped into arcs rather than seasons, knowing the episode numbers for the season finales are a good checkpoint to see if the numbering is off or not without having the search the entire list.

Oh, and I also noticed that there's two English #146's and #87's. This page really needs to be unlocked so these mistakes can be fixed. It looks like the Japanese numbers are fine but there's just some errors (not things that can really be disputed, just plain errors) that exist in the English numbering. So.. does anyone want to build a consensus, before this page gets locked again? A set of socks has made it a point to keep this page the way they want it, in blatant disregard for WP:OWN. i rather have it in the english airdate. If more people support using the episode ordering, by all means. but what is the use of the english episode if we just use the original episode ordering? we might as well take out the english episode no, since the japan ep no is aready there!
also, i had made the following changes to the page: new titles added, changing pokémon to pokemon in japan translation (pokemon in japan does not include the "é"), and fixing the orange league episode. if anyone want to change the no, DON'T REVERT! just change the no urself! You can be bold and edit anything, but if someone reverts your edits, you need to take it to the talk page, instead of reverting. Episode Numbers are all messed up in the English order

{{editprotected}} The episdoes that need to be fised are in the english sectioned numbers and must be fixed. Episode 87 appears twice on "In The Pink" and "Shell Shock." Episode 161 is followed by episode 163 but there is no 162. Episodes 314-319 are out of order and must be fixed. Episode 433 is followed by episode 436 and 434 and 435 are missing. I am afraid that this sort of thing is too complex to be done via an editprotected request. It would require actually verifying the correct episode numbers for the episodes, something that you can't expect a random admin to do in responding.
