Image review

I'm going to start listing the image issues here. I won't have time to go through all of the images right now, but you can start working on the ones I have found:

  • Image:E A Behring.jpg - Right now, there is no evidence that this image was made by the NIH (its license). Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed for now.
  • Image:RobertKoch cropped.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the NIH. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed for now.
  • Image:Santiago Ramón y Cajal.png - I'm a bit confused on the source here - it is listed as the Instituto Cajal, Madrid. What does that mean, exactly? Also, the license asserts that the image was published before 1923 - is that in the US and in Spain? What evidence do we have to verify the date provided in the image description?
    • Removed. I don't suppose this one is any better?
  • Image:Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov.jpg - The license tag for this image claims that the image was published before 1923 - what evidence is there of that?
    • Well, Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov did die in 1916, so the image would have had to have been made before then (although I guess it is possible that it was published after 1923). Is this one any better?
  • Image:Emil Theodor Kocher.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the NIH. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed for now.
  • Image:Allvar Gullstrand.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the NIH. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate that the NIH unequivocally produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed for now.
  • Image:Fredrick banting.jpg - This image has an incorrect source link - could you fix it so that I can verify the information and licensing?
  • Image:Willem Einthoven.jpg - We cannot use the "life of the author + 70 years" license, since we do not know who the author is. I would suggest a pre-1923 license. Do you know where the image was first published (that will determine which 1923 license)?
    • Fixed the licensing.
  • Image:Jules NICOLE.jpeg - This image is licensed under the "life of the author + 70 years", but we don't know who the author is. If this was published before Nicole died, we can easily justify a pre-1923 license, because he died in 1922. Do you know if it was published before he died?
    • Fixed the licensing.

I'll add more as I go. Awadewit (talk) 01:24, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Image:Christiaan Eijkman.jpg - The link to the permissions page is broken. Do we know anyone who speaks Dutch who could browse the site and fix this? And also possibly verify the license?
    • I have done a quick browse of the English version of the site and I haven't found that. I'll try to find someone who speaks Dutch to look through the Dutch version.
  • Image:Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed
  • Image:Alexander Fleming.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed, I'm surprised there aren't more images of him available.
  • Image:Ernst Boris Chain.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Carl Ferdinand Cori.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Gerty Theresa Cori.jpg - This image claims to be in the PD because it is a work of the NLM, however the link to that page clearly indicates that not everything at the NLM is a government work and therefore in the PD. We need some evidence that this photograph is a government work.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Forssmann-bueste.jpg - I am going to have to check on this image. Sculptures have different rules. We also need a translation of the German description.
  • Image:George W. Beadle.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Edward Lawrie Tatum.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Joshua Lederberg.jpg - I do not believe this image was created by the NIH. Note at the source how it says "The National Library of Medicine's Profiles in Science program has made every effort to secure proper permissions for posting items on the web site. In this instance, however, it has either not been possible to identify or contact the current copyright owner." We need information on who the copyright holder is.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Alan L. Hodgkin.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Andrew huxley trinity.png - This image is missing the author, date, and source. I think it might have been taken by the uploader. You might leave a note asking them to clarify that.
    • I've left a message for the uploader. He hasn't been active since mid 2007, so I'm not expecting a speedy reply.
  • Image:Georg von Bekesy.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Max Delbruck.jpg - This needs an OTRS ticket.
    • I've left a message for the image uploader.
  • Image:Salvador E. Luria teaching at MIT.jpg - This page indicates that the copyright holder is unknown: "The National Library of Medicine's Profiles in Science program has made every effort to secure proper permissions for posting items on the web site. In this instance, however, it has either not been possible to identify or contact the current copyright owner." We need some proof that this image was taken by the federal government, as claimed in the license.
    • Removed for now.

I'll keep adding as I go. Awadewit (talk) 15:45, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your help, by the way. -- Scorpion0422 21:06, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Image:Renato Dulbecco in 1966.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Howard M. Temin.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Andrzej W. Schally.jpg - The source link does not work for this image, which means that the license is not verifiable. Could you fix the link? Also, the image description page needs to be filled out.
    • I've searched the source website and haven't found it. Removed the image for now.
  • Image:Barbara McClintock at C.S.H. 1947.jpg - Note that this page states "The National Library of Medicine's Profiles in Science program has made every effort to secure proper permissions for posting items on the web site. In this instance, however, it has either not been possible to identify or contact the current copyright owner." - I don't see any evidence that this image was produced by the federal government, as claimed by the license.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Rita Levi-Montalcini in 1965.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that the NLM states that it does not own the copyright to these images. You need to track down more information about this image from another source, demonstrate unequivocally that the NIH produced it, or find another image.
    • Removed.
  • Image:HEVarmus.jpg - There is no evidence that this image was made by the federal government, as claimed by the license. Note that at the source, there are definitely non-governmental images, such as the cover of Newsweek. We can't assume everything on that page is government-made.
    • Removed.
  • Image:Eric F. Wieschaus.jpg - This image appears to be self-made. We need to verify that with the original uploader and add the description "self-made" to it after we confirm that.
    • I'll contact the uploader.
  • Image:Louis J. Ignarro portrait.jpg - Here it says that these photos are the copyright of the Nobel Foundation, not the US federal government. Do we have a reason to doubt that?
    • Removed.
  • Image:Martin Evans Nobel Prize.jpg - This needs an OTRS ticket.
    • I'll contact the image uploader.
  • Image:Barujbenacerraf.gif - The source says "Courtesy Baruj Benacerraf" - it is not entirely clear if that is referring to the text or the image, but I would guess the image, suggesting it is not a work of the US government as claimed by the license.
  • Image:Peter Mansfield Leipzig.jpg - I don't think non-commercial licenses are allowed. I'm confused by this combination of licenses, so I'll have to check on this one.

That's all of them. Awadewit (talk) 17:29, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Once again thanks for your help. -- Scorpion0422 17:39, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I noticed that a lot of pictures are missing, namely the ones for John Franklin Enders (1954), Sir Bernard Katz (1970), Karl von Frisch (1973), Allan M. Cormack (1979), George D. Snell (1980), David H. Hubel (1981), Bengt I. Samuelsson (1982), Georges J.F. Köhler (1984), Joseph E. Murray (1990), Edwin G. Krebs (1992), Edward B. Lewis (1995), Leland H. Hartwell (2001), H. Robert Horvitz (2002), Sir Robert G. Edwards (2010), Ralph M. Steinman (2011), and James E. Rothman (2013). I may have missed one or two. Is there a specific reason these people do not have photos here? If not, could people more experienced than I please fill in the gaps?108.7.216.189 (talk) 13:16, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Leucotomy or lobotomy?

What is the reason to use the word leucotomy instead of the more wellknown lobotomy for Muniz? Nopedia (talk) 15:01, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
