Table of rowers
[edit]@Lcmortensen, Raymarcbadz, Nurg, Grutness, and Mattlore: You've all been editing New Zealand at the 2016 Summer Olympics and might thus have an interest in this article that I've been working on. The next part to add is a table of Olympic rowers, and I've started that in my sandbox. As the table is going to be 244 rows long, it would be best if any structural changes get done early. So if you've got good ideas what to do different with this table, I'd love to hear about it soon! Input is much appreciated. Also, please share your thoughts on further ideas for this article. I'm making it up as I go; despite having had a look around, I couldn't find an 'Olympic athletes of foo' article elsewhere. Schwede66 09:25, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
- Looks good. Apart from the obvious male/female split (which would reduce the width of the table by a row), perhaps eras? There's bound to be some overlap, but there's already a distinct bunch of pre-WWII ones there. Maybe first split by male/female, and then by 20-year group "first olympic appearance prior to WWII, 1948-60, 1964-80, 1984-2000, 2004-"? Grutness...wha? 10:53, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. Am I understanding you right that you would split this into several tables? I'm not sure that I agree with that approach, as the reader could then not use the sort function of the table effectively any longer. Schwede66 18:02, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hmmm. Good point. Maybe just split into two tables, male and female. That would still lose a column from the table(s) but allow sorting. Perhaps adding in a "notes" column at the end for things like olympic/world record, whether they were the flag-bearer at the opening/closing ceremony, etc. Grutness...wha? 00:09, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for your thoughts. I've kept it as one table (now added), as I think it's important that readers can sort the table by medals won, number of Olympic appearances, etc. That gets more complex to assess if the data are across two tables. With regards to Olympic records and flagbearer, maybe that is best dealt with in the results tables and the accompanying text. I'll work on that. But it looks like a fine article by now.
