Which Are Actual Lusitanian Deities?
[edit]I question the inclusion of the following:
Coniumbricenses because this looks like an epithet meaning "of Coniumbriga" rather than a separate deity.
Crouga because it's based on the Lamas de Moledo inscription CROUCEAI and we can't even be sure whether this is a theonym. If it is, then *crouga as a reconstructed nom. form of the dat. crougeai stands in opposition to the attested dat. in TREBOPALA, ICCONA and LOIMINNA.
Epona because she's a Gallo-Roman import, not a native Lusitanian goddess.
Iuppiter Optimus Maximus because this is purely a Roman god.
Lucubo because it looks suspiciously like an inflected form of Lugus/Lugh.
Reue because it's in the dative case... the name would be *Reu or *Reui (c.f. Reo)
Anyone think differently? Paul S (talk) 17:08, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- I wonder what sources are available. I am entirely ignorant about Lusitanian mythology, and can not evaluate the entries, at least so far. Given references to relevant books, however, I could help verify if any of these have been claimed as Lusitanian dieties in those sources. Aleta Sing 17:13, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- There are various sources, some of which are mentioned in the main article or those of specific gods, but since most deities are simply names on dedicatory inscriptions and no more, they usually simply deal with cataloguing names and suggestng functions for the deities based on etymology and epithets assigned to them, or based on the Interpretatio Romana. There is no surviving corpus of Lusitanian mythology in the same way as there is for the Irish or Norse. See the article Lusitanian language for Crouga etc. Paul S (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- What I'll do is, make a Reue stub page, but explaining that it isn't really the god's name. Paul S (talk) 15:14, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, someone speed deleted Reue. To avoid getting into that, I'll make a Reo (Paramaeco) page and mention Reue as probably the same deity on that page, and make Reue a redirect to it. Paul S (talk) 15:20, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm also very doubtful about Sucellus as Lusitanian. We have what may be him on Celtiberian coins from Bílbilis (in Aragon) according to García Bellido, but it's doubtful and in any case this is a long way from Lusitania. This also calls into question his consort Nantosuelta - Miranda Green says she wasn't worshipped separately from him except in their Burgundian homeland. Paul S (talk) 19:13, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Removed Lucubo because the Wikipedia article on Lugh confirms what I thought. Paul S (talk) 15:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- And Nantosvelta has no Lusitanian dedication that I've been able to find. I've added what may be an equivalent, Sulae Nantugicae. Paul S (talk) 15:55, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
A few names are really close to gods from the Pyrenees, like Laho/Lahe. I'm not expert though, so they could be different. This site in Spanish has the location of some of those gods, with a bibliography. http://www.imagopyrenaei.eu/04-las-divinidades-indigenas ; http://www.imagopyrenaei.eu/05-divinidades-indigenas-de-la-civitas-convenarum-y-limitrofes Paedric (talk) 14:28, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Additions
[edit]I've added a Trebopala entry - not a stub because it can't really be expanded unless another piece of archaeology is discovered - and changed Neto to point to a new entry on the god rather than on the grandfather word in Portuguese. This is about as much as I can contribute on Lusitanian deities. Paul S (talk) 23:13, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Name Cull
[edit]At some point I think someone has read a lot of Latin inscriptions and assumed names were deities which were actually places ("the Lares of X") and a couple are mis-spellings or lacked a second name which I've added. Lots of names still on the list occur on only one inscription. There were a few I couldn't find anywhere at all on Hispania Epigraphica or anywhere else. Replace them if you can find a source. I removed I.O.M. because he's obviously Roman. Paul S (talk) 16:55, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
