Rossies

[edit]

Anyone know where "Rossies" for Roscommon comes from? Ulysses includes (Chp.13):

If they could run like rossies she could sit so she said she could see from where she was.

Does rossies here mean "people from Roscommon"? If not, what does it mean, and is it related to the Roscommon nickname? jnestorius(talk) 20:22, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, "rossies" in Joyce means "brazen women". (Wall, Richard (1987). An Anglo-Irish Dialect Glossary for Joyce's Works. Syracuse, New York: Syracuse University Press. ISBN 0-8156-2399-2.) The plot thickens... jnestorius(talk) 15:18, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is this about

[edit]

Is this a GAA article or a Ireland in general article ? Basically is this about the counties of Ireland or the GAA counties. If it about the Irish counties the links should point to the county ie County Dublin not Dublin GAA, if it's the GAA the title needs to be changed Gnevin (talk) 22:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved this back to "List of Irish county nicknames". As the intro states, most nicknames are mostly used for the GAA, but not all and not always. I've put links to both the county and the GAA county in the table rows. jnestorius(talk) 17:11, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The GAA title was better ,as it nearly entirely about the GAA Gnevin (talk) 18:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The only entries directly about the GAA are the ones derived from the county colours, and the New York and London ones. The rest can equally be used with no reference to the GAA team. It's true they often are so used, but then, as Counties of Ireland states, the GAA is a major cause of the perpetuation of county-based identity in Ireland. jnestorius(talk) 23:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Londonderry,Dublin , Northern six ,London and New York

[edit]

Should the following be added? Gnevin (talk) 11:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

*= Note the GAA county is simple called Derry

  • Should london and new york have **

**= Note the not a country of Ireland but included here as its a GAA county

  • Should Dublin have a ***

***=No longer a legal county

  • And finally should the nortern counties have ****

****=In Northern Ireland no longer a legal county .

Other symbols would be better of course but i can figure them out at the moment Gnevin (talk) 11:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think a general note at the start of the list would be better than cluttering the table with footnotes -- it's hard to deal with citation notes and clarification notes in the same piece. There are two points:
  1. that this relates to the "traditional" counties (hence Dub, Tipp, NI) regardless of current administrative status.
  2. That the non-Irish GAA "county" teams have nicknames... Maybe, if there are more than the current few entries there, these could be quarantined in a separate table?
Nice cites for the Jacks, BTW. jnestorius(talk) 22:03, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks , Ok good idea that should sort of the NI ,Dublin and Londonderry issues , i will move london and ny later today as the Hertz has to be added Gnevin (talk) 08:23, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DERRY

To anyone who changes Derry to LondonDerry. Please read the first line from this page...... This is a list of nicknames for the the traditional counties of Ireland and their inhabitants. The nicknames are mainly used with reference to the county's representative team in gaelic games organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA

Derry is never called Londonderry in reference to GAA and so it should not be switched bach to londonderry, I am not getting into the debate of londonderry vs derry but i am simply stating in reference to Gaelic games Derry is NEVER refered to as Londonderry.

Thank you.

Ps. Ben W Bell Do not block me again! i was not vandlising anything only trying to better the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.64.72.252 (talk) 15:03, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you noted it is about the traditional counties. The traditional county is called County Londonderry not County Derry. This isn't an article about what the GAA calls counties, but the nicknames for the traditional counties. Canterbury Tail talk 15:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The reason "Londonderry" is used in this article is because of a longstanding Wikipedia agreement that that is used for the county while "Derry" is used for the city. I've just created WP:LDERRY as a shortcut to the policy, for use in edit summaries etc. jnestorius(talk) 01:17, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

@Gnevin the team is derry, the county may be Londonderry geographically the hurling and gaelic football teams use Derry due to the non-UK and Irish links of the GAA 78.16.204.244 (talk) 23:49, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Queens County

[edit]

Is The Queen's County another nickname for Laois? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.152.237.10 (talk) 12:54, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No it was the official name of the county during British rule, rarely or never used today Gnevin (talk) 10:41, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edits 20090207

[edit]

I've made some changes:

  • removed "Blues brothers" as a nickname for Cavan. It had incorrect citations, presumably as a result of copy-paste error. Googling found me only one source Irish News. There was also an Irish Independent report on a Dublin-Cavan game where Dublin were called the Blues brothers. If this nickname is widespread, someone should be able to find a more convincing source to cite, and then re-add it. Hack journos come up with a wide range of variations on "the reds", "the blues", etc, which we ought not to list here.
  • removed "Flour bags" for Kildare; one reference, to the father of the owner of a self-catering cottage, is not very reliable. It's apparently obsolete, though with a better citation it would still be worth listing.
  • restored "Donkey Aters" for Cork, which is sourced. It's not flattering but neither are some of the others.
  • remove blurredkeys reference for BIFFO, which is just a blogpost linking to the original BCC reference. See also WP:SPS.
  • removed "blood and bandage", which (unlike yellowbellies, lilywhites, etc) refers to the strip, not the players (Another copy-paste citation error too.) Worth adding to GAA county colours though.
  • changed {{convert|500|acre}} to "500 acres" since it was in a direct quotation

jnestorius(talk) 01:17, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should either remove Mayo: "The Green above the Red" or add back in Cork: "The Blood and Bandage". ~ Ablaze (talk) 22:04, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article name

[edit]

As this article is basically a list of GAA nicknames for Irish counties should the article namespace instead not be: List of Irish county GAA nicknames? Misleading otherwise. Mabuska (talk) 00:30, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article name (again)

[edit]

This article covers GAA nicknames and basically nothing else Jnestorius. Indeed there is that little, and it is incredibly little, non-GAA info that the non-GAA info wouldn't even merit a stub or article of its own or even notability. Mabuska (talk) 13:30, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Also what consensus did I need to move the page? It wasn't controversial and no-one, not even the article creator (you) responded to my page move query back in December!Talk:List_of_Irish_county_nicknames#Article_name. I think I left it long enough for responses. Mabuska (talk) 13:33, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jnestorius:, any response before I initiate a page move request? Mabuska (talk) 09:45, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Meta: Sorry I didn't notice it in December. So here we are in WP:BRD. By all means propose a move, and I will disagree, and we will see if anyone else comments.
Substantive: Putting "GAA" in the article title is misleading, because it suggests all the names originate with the GAA and are only ever used in allusion to the GAA teams. Some names were coined before the GAA. Some are well known to people with no knowledge of or interest in the GAA. Some are used e.g. by local TDs in the Dáil in contexts other than GAA discussions. IMO the following at least are in no way dependent on the GAA: The Banner/Faithful/Model/Orchard/Premier/Rebel/Royal/Short Grass/Yeats County; The Biffos, Fighting Cocks, Scallion Eaters, Slashers, Stone Throwers; The Breffni/Kingdom/Pale; Tipp, Tyrconnell; Garden of Ireland, Land of Heart's Desire, Mayo God help us, Tyrone among the bushes.
jnestorius(talk) 10:34, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is why I am going to initiate a page move request for outside input. I note that this issue came up back in 2008 as well and looking at the WikiProject Ireland discussion by Gnevin, there is not much discussion or input and well that was almost 10 years ago. I strongly disagree that it would suggest the names originate from the GAA and it can easily be worded to dispel any possible suggestions of that if it can be proved however it looks quite obvious that most of them do originate from the GAA. Obviously some may have moved from GAA to colloquial use but this list is still primarily almost entirely about GAA county nicknames. Mabuska (talk) 11:10, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You say "some may have moved from GAA to colloquial", but it is also true that some began outside the GAA and moved to it. Considering we have a GAA county article it would not be at all unreasonable to infer that "List of Irish GAA county nicknames" refers to GAA counties and not county counties. So the choices are
  1. have "GAA" in the title and a caution in the lede that not all of them are GAA related,
  2. leave "GAA" out of the title and have a note in the lede that most often they are GAA related.
  3. title "List of nicknames for Irish counties and GAA counties" or some such
To my mind, #3 is a longwinded but #1 is downright confusing. jnestorius(talk) 12:45, 25 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I forgot about this discussion die to other things. The article as is downright confusing. I think a RfC for more input might help. Mabuska (talk) 21:11, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This section referencing people from offaly as big ignorant fuckers is derogatory and insulting to people from Offaly. Surprised that the word fuckers or even a reference to it is on this page. The section pasted below should be deleted. Pjoky (talk) 21:42, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Irish County names

[edit]

There is no county called London Derry. Although you may have chosen to alter the city name the county name has never been London Derry. 106.68.43.81 (talk) 11:36, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You may wish to read the article on County Londonderry in which case you'll notice that the county of Londonderry was created primarily from the former County Coleraine and there was in fact not a former County Derry other than an odd administrative unit that was not coterminous with the final county. Anyway on Wikipedia as per WP:DERRY we refer to the city as Derry and the county as Londonderry. Canterbury Tail talk 12:28, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please remove the Londonderry and change it to it's proper name of Derry or Dóire.the London prefix is offensive Derryharry69 (talk) 18:00, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done. The county was created as County Londonderry from County Coleraine, there has not been a County Derry. See WP:DERRY and the history on County Londonderry. Canterbury Tail talk 20:06, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
