Another pendulum

I just wanted to say that we have a foucault pendulum in my university: Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. It's located in: Ground Flour of the 2nd Block, Ciudad Universitaria, Buenos Aires, Argentina. There are some pictures and a short description of it here.--Pfc432 03:32, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Turkey

According to wikipedia Izmir and Ankara are in Asia. Any objections to moving the Turkey entry to Asia? Darsie from german wiki pedia (talk) 19:22, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorting

Do you think we should make the list sortable? Gamefreak2413 (talk) 00:14, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

I don't know how much effort this is, but I don't need it. By what criterions? Length, mass, latitude? Maybe if there is more data. Darsie from german wiki pedia (talk) 19:27, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

University of Arizona

The stated period of this pendulum seems very short for the length. I make it just over 13 seconds, not the 9.4 seconds quoted. SpinningSpark 15:23, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

I make it nearly 14 seconds. Perhaps there is a gravitational anomaly in Arizona? Or perhaps it is a compound pendulum with an aluminium bob and a platinum rod? More likely is that Spinningspark is correct in suspecting that the quoted figures are incorrect. Could someone in Arizona go and measure? Dbfirs 17:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
(later) I can't find specifications on their website. Some comments suggest that they don't bother to set the pendulum in motion! Dbfirs 17:55, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

I wish I'd read this page first, but they DO have it in motion and have posted the period. 9.4 feels about right. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.163.71.105 (talk) 19:27, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

The point that SpinningSpark correctly made is that it is almost impossible for a 160-foot pendulum to have a period of 9.4 seconds. If you can confirm the period, then perhaps the quoted length is wrong. Could someone please check? Dbfirs 00:18, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
I've been in touch with ASU, and the figures they provided were: Cable length is 70.5 feet (21.5 m). Weight of pendulum 238 lbs. (108 kg). Period of swing is 9.3 second. I've put these figures in the table - they sound more convincing. Dbfirs 07:41, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Nonexistent pendulum

The pendulum at Foothill College no longer exists. I have removed it from the list DrAstro (talk) 20:10, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

I thought there was a Foucault pendulum in a building at the Naval Postgraduate School, in the elevator lobby of one building (and perhaps using an empty shaft). A2Kafir (and...?) 04:33, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Israel in Europe ??

Long Beach, CA

Added the pendulum in the Sunnyside Mausoleum, now Forest Lawn, to the list. It's been there for at least 30-40 years and most likely 60-80 years. There is a little plaque describing what a Foucault pendulum is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.178.132.148 (talk) 06:35, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Buffalo, NY

There's one in the Buffalo Museum of Science. I remember seeing it all the time when I was a kid. I just checked to make sure it's still there, which it is (and just repaired a few years ago).Link I'm adding it to the list.72.225.232.224 (talk) 05:57, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Matt

Plural

Since the standard plural of pendulum is pendulums (OED), and pendula is a rare form coined in the seventeenth century (along with the use of pendulum as a noun), should we not re-name this article List of Foucault pendulums? Dbfirs 12:49, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I moved it. – b_jonas 23:50, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I've now edited the text to the correct plural. (Am I being a pedantulum?) Dbfirs 00:11, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
I've put the situation back to the way it has been since 2008 (after a move on May 10th). I'm surprised that so many Physics textbooks use the plural "pendula". This would be correct if "pendulum" were a second declension Latin noun, but it isn't, and never was. Most dictionaries on both sides of the Atlantic give "pendulums" as the correct plural. Ukraine

In Ukraine we have one ot the bigest pendulum in Europe. Acording to this page Ukraine not ever exist... 37.53.137.28 (talk) 09:22, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

The only reason we don't have your Ukraine pendulum is that we don't know about it. Please find a website (probably a university site) that describes it, then we can add details. Dbfirs 16:10, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
