Venue name for '87 site?

There's a bit of an edit war about whether or not to show the French name of the venue. Looking at the Heysel article, it gives the venue name in English with both French and Dutch as parenthetical alternate names.

Since this is the English Wikipedia, it stands to reason that the English name should be used. Personally, I favor the English name alone, though English (Dutch, French) could be an alternate presentation.

Normally I would be bold and make this change, but since the presentation is already contentuous, I want to discuss the matter first. What opinions do my fellow editors have on this subject? —C.Fred (talk) 16:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Flags of subnational entities

When I first saw this article, the UK host cities had a flag of either England or Scotland next to their name. Now these flags have been removed, but the flags of f.e. Bavaria and Hesse have since been added. I think we should use some guideline about which flags should appear and which not, or if there should be no subnational flags at all.

By the way the article shows the flag of Brussels Capital Region, but that entity has been founded in 1989 and the flag dates from 1991, so I think it's historically incorrect to show it here. For the same reason I also changed the flag of Spain to the old one, but that has been reversed by someone else. Dinsdagskind (talk) 08:17, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Host City Insignia

The host city insignia is more related to the hosting of the contest, for which the list of cities would be more suitable, and would provide more in-depth scope into what the hosting is all about. Wes Mouse  ^T@lk 18:24, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

At the moment not only is the venue undecided but also the host city. Wouldn't it be more accurate to have TBA in the City column until a decision is announced? Mcljlm (talk) 02:03, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

footnote regarding Germany

There's no need for this footnote. It's not even technically accurate. All three contests were held in the Federal Republic of Germany - which was the name of the country when it hosted Eurovision in Frankfurt, Munich and Duesseldorf. 'West Germany' has never been the actual name of this country and 're-unified Germany' is a totally bogus way of referring to the country. I don't understand why the creator of this footnote feels it important to divide the German host cities into two that happened before the collapse of the Communist GDR regime and one that happened after. Seeing as no city in the GDR ever hosted Eurovision, it's irrelevant to make a distinction in hosting cities pre and post 1990. Vauxhall1964 (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Black dot

What is the "Contest themes and slogans" section doing here?

I know Sims2aholic8 has been making a lot of improvements to the Eurovision Song Contest article because of its Good Article nomination (that I haven't really been following), but I'm wondering why the themes and slogans section ended up here. I personally don't think the contest's themes and slogans have much to do with the city in which it is hosted. ―JochemvanHees (talk) 17:24, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

@JochemvanHees: It was a suggestion raised in the GA review, given the size of the parent article and in an attempt to trim down where possible so that it is a lot more succinct and focussed. Personally I think that's a fair assessment, and wherever this table does end up can be linked to the main ESC article, but I also sympathise that perhaps this isn't the right place to keep it. I'm not sure however where else this might be better placed. Any ideas? Sims2aholic8 (talk) 17:56, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

I looked around a bit and I think that if it can't be in the Eurovision Song Contest article, the most appropriate place would be History of the Eurovision Song Contest, as it alreadly contains a list of editions. "Cities"?

I wonder if this page has quite the right title - several of these places aren't cities. There are a few towns (Lugano, Harrogate, Brighton) and one place which is just a little village (Millstreet). You do have a point. The first column for the table lists the number of contests that the host country has hosted, not the host city. This suggests to me that the article should really be named "List of countries that have hosted the Eurovision Song Contest".

This will become more problematic if/when Zagreb will host a future Eurovision under a different country, Croatia. This came close to happening for the 2025 Eurovision as Croatia came in 2nd in the 2024 Eurovision. –The seas and skies are blue (talk) 20:03, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

"Host city" in many ways is more an official designation than really a determination about what is a city. The definition of a city also varies depending on the country, which is well beyond the scope of this article. Yes some of the host settlements have been on the smaller side in the past, I don't believe that warrants a name change for this article. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 08:57, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
