Pruning List

[edit]

Lists of people should be limited to notable individuals only. Adding additional names requires both verifiable evidence that they attended the college and indication that they are otherwise notable. Otherwise the list becomes an unmanageable name farm for attendees who any wikipedia editor might feel belongs there. We get list entries like "the famous professor so and so" or "the amazing actor". That's not appropriate and isn't going to happen. Protonk (talk) 20:02, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Intention to significantly trim list

[edit]

WP:NLIST, which is a part of our notability guidelines for people, says that people may not be included on a list must "Inclusion in lists contained within articles should be determined by WP:Source list, in that the entries must have the same importance to the subject as would be required for the entry to be included in the text of the article according to Wikipedia policies and guidelines (including WP:Trivia sections). Furthermore, every entry in any such list requires a reliable source attesting to the fact that the named person is a member of the listed group." As such, in 1 week or so, I will be removing every name on this list that is does not have a Wikipedia article. Technically, I should check all of the Wikipedia articles, too, to make sure they have a source verifying the people are on this list, but for now I want to just get rid of the most obvious problems.

If you want anyone to be retained, you must provide a reliable source or two, and it must verify 1) that the person is important in some way, and 2) attended this university. Qwyrxian (talk) 04:35, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I too agree that this list needs a check for notability of the people included. But removing all the entries which do not have a separate article sounds bit too harsh, especially because there are only a few editors working on Sri Lanka-related biographies, and many biographies need to be created. Therefore I suggest we should keep entries which do not have a separate article, but provides an RS that attests the named person to the institution. For the time being, I will remove the entries which are obviously problematic. Astronomyinertia (talk) 17:09, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The RS needs to prove both 2 things: 1) the person went to this school, and 2) they are important in some way (i.e., not every graduate can be on this list). Two different RS's are fine. But without those, they must be removed; they can always be re-added later. Qwyrxian (talk) 09:12, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just took care of some stuff...but noticed a massive problem: the vast majority of the references either don't meet WP:RS, or, more commonly, don't verify the person went to this school. I'm going to have to go to every single source and check, but I expect that almost all of this list will be deleted. Qwyrxian (talk) 14:32, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Island.lk?

[edit]

The article [1], is used to verify a number of the people on this list. What is island.lk? Is this a reliable source? I doubt it, given that there is no information anywhere on the site about even the title of the website, who owns it, etc. But I'll wait to see if anyone has more info before removing. Qwyrxian (talk) 10:24, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Island (island.lk) is an English language-daily published by Upali Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd in Sri Lanka. It is also listed here. I believe it is an RS. Older format of the website does not give a link to the current home page as it seems. ASTRONOMYINERTIA (TALK) 18:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I should have just tried typing the beginning of the address myself. That does appear to be a reliable source, if not a particularly internet savvy one :). And thanks for finding sources for the ones I removed. I'm going to keep cutting names out when I have time, but it's always okay to add them back if sourced.
