Article design

[edit]

This article is meant to be a brief summary of urban planners, in that sense it is also an entry point to understand planning in Canada.

The criteria is as follow: Why they are notable? Own an award Recognized at a conference Contributions to academic field of planning Contributions to field of planning

Comment

[edit]

Sorry, just a drive-by comment here. I know this is a student project so I didn't touch the page while you are working on it. I was thinking that this would be good to make into a "list" as opposed to a titled page. For instance, it could be moved to the title of "List of plannner in Canada" or something similar that you decide on. Here is an example - List of urban planners. Just an opinion. Good luck with editing and hope you all stick around after the class. --CNMall41 (talk) 21:37, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. We thought about making a list, however, we were worried that the list (with just the date, name, and place) is not informative enough. There aren't enough notable Canadian planners that have their own wikipedia pages. Therefore, the list would require the user to go to a search engine to find out more on these people. We wanted to ensure that readers can get a sense of who these people are, and can do more background research elsewhere if they wish! Wongvvn (talk) 21:55, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Review of article: 2nd and 3rd sentences: “The planning profession originally focused on city layout, land subdivision and architecture and grew dramatically after 1945 due to the growth of Canadian cities. The profession now includes a diverse range of subjects such as urban sociology, data analysis and forecasting, municipal and planning law, management sciences and environmental sciences.” - I think it would be a good idea to add citations here to show where this knowledge came from

4th sentence: “about 7,000 persons in 2009.” - Change from “persons” to “practitioners”

Table heading - Change “and their contribution” to “and their contributions”

Thomas Adams entry - What is your source for his active years? - Change “Town Planner” to “Town Planning” to make it more consistent with later entries - Whose ideas are you referring to as being “broader and deeper”? Maybe you could say something like “although some authors suggest that these ideas were broader and deeper” - Change “he founded in 1919 the…” to “in 1919 he founded the…” - Source for appointment as advisor to Canadian Commission of Conservation?

Paul Bedford entry - Is he “current” or past? - Maybe his area of expertise could be something like “Urban Design”, “Neighbourhood Planning”, etc.? - Add “for the King-Spadina and King-Parliament neighbourhoods in Toronto” - Citation for College of Fellows and CIP membership?

Peter Boothroyd entry - Your notation of “- current” here is inconsistent with your other entries that simply say “Current” - Change “He was in collaboration with…” to “He worked in the 1980s in collaboration with Indigenous communities to conduct participatory planning exercises, through the University of British Columbia.”

Ken Cameron entry - Change “9 Decision that…” to “Nine Decisions that…” - Include citation for College of Fellows membership at CIP

Humphrey Carver entry - All of your sentences start with “He”. I think it would be great to have more variety here in sentence structure. - In the “Awards and Appointments” column there is an extra “-” after citation 14

Arthur Charles Erickson entry - Change “Architecture and Urban Planner” to “Architecture and Urban Planning” - Change “who received international recognition or his…” to “who received international recognition for his”

Jill Grant entry - Could you add a link to the Wikipedia article for creative class?

Harry Lash entry - Do you have a citation for his membership in CIP’s college of fellows?

Ann McAfee entry - Change “Phd” to “PhD”

Peter Oberlander entry - Could you add a Wikipedia link for “UN Habitat” and maybe split his contributions into multiple sentences. It seems like a lot to trail on in one sentence with many semi-colons. - Do you have citations/sources for his awards?

William E. Rees entry - It would be great to include a link to the Wikipedia article for ecological footprints - Change “He is the founder of Ecological Footprint concept” to “He is the founder of the Ecological Footprint concept” - I would change the last column to read: “He was recognized as one of B.C.’s leading public Intellectuals in 2000 by the Vancouver Sun,[33] sas awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Laval University, and became a fellow at the Royal Society of Canada in 2006.[34] Rees received the Trudeau Foundation Fellowship in 2007.[35] In 2012 he was awarded the Boulding Prize in Ecological Economics [36] and the Blue Planet Prize.[37]”

Norbert Schoenauer entry - Change “He published in 1981, 6000…” to “In 1981, he published 6000…” - Make sure that the title of his book is italicised, to make it consistent with other book entries that you have mentioned. - Change last column to “He taught for 40 years at the McGill School of Architecture,[39] and was Executive Director of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation from 1975-1977.[38]….”

Jeanne Wolfe entry - Change “urban planning in Quebec as an academic professor and as professional planner…” to “urban planning in Quebec as an academic professor and as a professional planner. Her interests include housing, planning processes, and international planning.” - Change “to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the World Bank, and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)…” to “to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)…”

Overall I think this is a good article and I really like how you have presented the information as a table! It is easy to read and understand, and it flows well. I think your article could use some work in making the grammar and language consistent: - Decide whether or not you will use the Oxford comma, and make it consistent throughout the whole article/table. - Not all of the areas of expertise are capitalised. I would probably capitalise all of the first words of each title/area of expertise (ie. Regional transportation instead of regional transportation) - Any pictures of these planners that you could add for context? Ernettita (talk) 14:33, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

:Thanks so much for all of these feedback Ernettita . We have incorporated them. Aylin Tavakoli (talk) 07:05, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Aylintavakoli[reply]

Orphan article

[edit]

We should search each planners page and add a link to this article in the "See also" section. Where there is no see also section, we should create it. I just did it on Thomas Adams' artcile. Injeniero (talk) 09:45, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
