Saltspring and not Princess Royal, Graham or Moresby?
[edit]Haven't been by this page before; I see Lulu Island's already been credited but of the Gulf Islands only Saltspring; if it's there so should be Quadra and Texada at least (they're larger) and not a few others like Gabriola and Bowen. There's also much larger islands up-coast, notably Princess Royal (near Hartley Bay, where the ferry sinking happened, and of course Gil Island which the ferry hit in the dark - no inhabitants on Gil, though there are on Princess Royal). Prince Rupert is on, or incorporates, an island (I'll have to look up its name and add it) and of course the major islands of the Queen Charlottes are inhabited. There's also Malcolm Island (Sointula) and Malcolm Island, where Alert Bay is and the villages and other habitations of the Broughton Archipelago, Desolation Sound and Discovery Passage. OK, OK, I'm the BCer and will try and research this but just asking/assuming that only islands with population are to be counted/listed?Skookum1 22:42, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- It's a list by population, so only the most populous should be added. That's why relatively physically tiny ones are there, and huge ones like Ellesmere aren't. AshleyMorton 14:54, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
I see Grand Isle is there but not neighbouring and more populous Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec. Is that because it wasn't an island until the Beauharnois Canal was built? I'm pretty sure the canal is a deepened stretch of the river and that this was an island previously, too. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 15:54, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- If it were an island, wouldn't it have a name? -- Earl Andrew - talk 06:37, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
BC sublist
[edit]- List of British Columbia islands by population seems to be a worthy/needed spinoff...
- List of British Columbia islands by area (or List of islands in teh Pacific Northwest by area...come to think of it List of Pacific Northwest islands by population makes sense too (Vashon, Mercer, Whidbey....)Skookum1 (talk) 13:12, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Note to self.
[edit]Île Hull should be on this list. To the best of my knowledge, it's not man made, as there's nothing on the article for Brewery Creek that indicates it is a canal. Unfortunately, the GeoSearch function on the StatsCan website is not working today, so I can't get a population figure. -- Earl Andrew - talk 16:25, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Density figures
[edit]Why are the density figures from 2006? That's sadly outdated and can be calculated quickly right now by dividing the 2016 population by land size (land size doesn't change significantly throughout the years). And where are the citations? These are not citations, these are notes. They should be entered using the ref and note templates. And citations should be added. This article is so not up to standards and needs a complete makeover. And pictures would be beneficial too. Zacharycmango (talk) 00:15, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- It's a lot of work; just haven't gotten around to doing it. Thank you for your edits. -- Earl Andrew - talk 03:18, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- In order to satisfy the recommendation on Wikipedia:Image dos and don'ts, to Try to find at least one image for each article., should this article include images beside each island name? Zacharycmango (talk) 21:57, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
Gabriola and Fairfield Island
[edit]I don't know the exact population for Fairfield Island in Chilliwack, BC, but I know it is in the 1000s and might make it onto this list. If anyone can find a concrete figure, please add it to this list. I do not think it is a manmade island. I also know that Gabriola Island, BC, has a population of over 4050, but whether that makes it big enough to be included on the list, I do not know. Other borderline island for inclusion are Graham island and Pender Island (before canal split it in half), which each claim between 4000-5000 people. Zacharycmango (talk) 04:54, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- When I made this list, I used 5000 as a cut off. It doesn't seem like any of those islands have over 5000 people.-- Earl Andrew - talk 05:28, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- I thought that might of been the case. In my opinion, it would be good to note that in the article. Zacharycmango (talk) 16:57, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- Done. Of course, we can always expand the list if someone wants to do the research. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:32, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- Also, Cape Dorset and Qikiqtarjuaq actually lie on islands of the coast of Baffin Island, so they should not be included. Zacharycmango (talk) 22:02, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
