[edit]Having changed the title of the Mildmay of Flete to the Racing Post Plate a few weeks back I've now had seconds and decided to revert the name back to the race's generic, rather than sponsored title.
I've also seen in today's (14th Dec 06) Evening Standard, that the new Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton Park will replace the Castleford Chase at Wetherby. I haven't altered the list yet though. Bcp67 21:55, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Listed Races
[edit]
Looking for some good names, especially for the myriad of Mares' Hurdles and NH Flat Races. Any sµggestions?
Does anyone know of "official" names for the two Listed races at Kempton today? They had been sponsored by William Hill for a while, but Matchbook have taken over this year - will that last? October Hurdle and October Novices' Hurdle would describe them fairly well but lacks gravitas, so I am hoping someone has a better suggestion. (JockeyColours (talk) 17:57, 22 October 2017 (UTC))
- Annoyingly they don't seem to have registered titles. In the 2015-16 Jumps Pattern Book [1] they show with their then-sponsored title. Choices seem to be either to go with the sponsored titles and keep moving them or make up a title (would count as OR I think) - neither is ideal really but using the sponsored titles would be the least-worst choice. --Bcp67 (talk) 18:26, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
Discontinued Races
[edit]I see there was no Contenders Hurdle at the recent Scilly Isles meeting at Sandown so I assume it is correct that the race has been discontinued. Are there any links stating this that can be added to the race page? I assume the "Last Run" column on this page should therefore be Feb 2022?(JockeyColours (talk) 14:07, 22 February 2023 (UTC))
- I noticed that race had gone missing, although Sandown still marketed the meeting as Contenders Day, and it is not in the 2022-23 BHA jump pattern book [2] so I think it's reasonable to move it to the Discontinued section. I found this link mentioning it had been removed in the context of Constitution Hill's schedule - [3]. Bcp67 (talk) 15:20, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
- More on this today @JockeyColours: confirmation that the race has been removed from the programme, along with a fair few other changes - [4] --Bcp67 (talk) 16:41, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Convert + display:none
[edit]I did a minor fix to some {{convert}} parameters to remove the article from an error category. What is the idea behind:
{{convert|2|mi|3.5|furlong|m|0}}
Is that for a sort key? If so, it wouldn't work very well because it would be sorting on the text
2 miles 3.5 furlongs (3,923 m)
If a sort key is what is wanted, I'll change the converts to get a better result. By the way, if you ever wanted to actually display the convert results, something like this might be used:
{{cvt|2|mi|3+1/2|furlong|m|0}}
→ 2 mi 3+1⁄2 furlongs (3,923 m)
Add |disp=table
or |disp=tablecen
for use in a table with alignment right and center, respectively. Also, the grid would be better with a gray color and some margin. Johnuniq (talk) 01:41, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Johnuniq for your help and thoughts. Yes, the idea is to be able to sort the table by race distance - they are shown in the table by the traditional horse racing measurements of miles and furlongs but we convert to metres so it can be sorted by the distance, but doesn't show the metric equivalent. It does appear to work - if I sort the "Listed" section ascending, it starts with the shortest race (1m 6f) and ends with the longest (3m ½f), but from what you are saying that might just be coincidental and it's the text which is sorting rather than the converted value?
- The table used to have a different type of sort, which you can still see in the "Grade 1" and "Grade 2" sections, where a manual conversion to matres is used - the problem is that new races get added and that sort value wasn't being correctly maintained, so I tried something different in a couple of sections which could be more understandable. I'm open to anything you can suggest which might help. --Bcp67 (talk) 06:59, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- I have a plan for something that will be much easier and more reliable. I'll be back in a day or two. Johnuniq (talk) 09:51, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you - sounds promising! Bcp67 (talk) 13:46, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- I created {{Horse race distance}} and {{hrd}} as a more convenient shortcut. See the massive edits I made to the article and the documentation for the template. Please check the result and let me know if there are any problems. I could then edit related articles to use {{hrd}} as I did here. This article only uses miles and furlongs but the templates also handles yards which is apparently sometimes needed. Johnuniq (talk) 02:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for all your work on this - it looks absolutely fantastic and really helps. Thank you for including the parameter for yards, which are used more in the flat racing lists. I read the template doc and tried it in List of British flat horse races#Sales where some of the distances include yards, and it works perfectly, so I can now go through and add the template to that list as well. Really appreciate your assistance, thank you. Bcp67 (talk) 07:25, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Citeria for this list
[edit]There no longer seems to be any criteria for this list. We now have "selected" races which have no clear reason for being "selected". Should it just be cut back to Grade 1, 2, Listed & Premier Handicaps? Or do we include anything above a certain status - a specific prize value, or anything above Class 2 for example? Any views on this? Bcp67 (talk) 19:20, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @TCMallard, now we've sorted out criteria for the British flat race list, what's the criteria for the handicap races in this article? Class 2 and value, plus a course's main race of the season etc? Bcp67 (talk) 16:00, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Bcp67 my general rule is about £40,000 and yes the more historical or significant lower grade ones e.g. every regional national TCMallard (talk) 17:18, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- sorry that should be £50,000 TCMallard (talk) 17:22, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- I'll add the class and values columns to the handicap list for 2024-25 - the first race of the new season on the list, Staffordshire Plate, is on Saturday, so no point in doing all the 2023-24 ones now. Bcp67 (talk) 17:26, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
