This article should have years of degrees and, if possible, the level of the degree (B.A., B.S., M.A.,M.S., PhD), etc. 4.228.213.207 16:11, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a slew of people over the last 24 hours, but have not (yet) taken the time to add year and degree program. --Malharden 12:54, 19 July 2006 (UTC) 09:00, 19 July 2006[reply]

I think it wouild also be a good idea to include the school or college the person graduated from, in the form of the standard 2-4 character abbreviation. Pzavon 22:01, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nobel Inflation

[edit]

Not to be overly picky, but two of the eight Nobel laureates listed in this article have no significant ties to B.U.

Murray Gell-Mann and Amartya Sen were both nominally visiting professors for a year, but their appointments only involved giving a handful of public lectures and they weren't in residence.

Good point. Have you deleted them? Pzavon (talk) 02:15, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LaGuer

[edit]

There's really no reason to include more than what's already written about that person. And we certainly shouldn't be stating things that are highly contentious without sources here. The person's article is the place to discuss his conviction and the evidence relating to it, because it can be properly nuanced and sourced. -- Jonel | Speak 04:08, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Honorary Degrees of Zhang Yimou

[edit]

I see one editor has added Zhang Yimou to the list. His only connection with BU is that he will be given an Honorary Degree in May 2009. No others whose only BU connection is that they are Honorary Degree recipients are listed here, although most would likely qualify as being prominant, but few would have any other substantial connection with the University. (Marshall Petain of France received an Honarary Degree from BU in the 1920's, as a example.) I have reverted this one edit on the grounds that the degree has not yet been awarded. However, in general I believe that Honorary Degree recipients ought not to be listed here unless they have some other connection with BU that would lead to their being listed anyway. Comments? Pzavon (talk) 04:16, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Really? Hon. degree can't be listed here? Oh, OK, then please explain to me what are John F. Smith, Jr., Jason Alexander, Marisa Tomei & Nicholas Gage doing here? The list contains people who did not complete any university programs (aka - Dropouts) - Rosie O'Donnell, Paul Reubens & Patti Rothberg just to name a few. You go ahead & remove those names, then I will remove Zhang Yimou myself. TheAsianGURU (talk) 19:01, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've asked for an Admin to review our sort-of discussions and make suggestions. My point is that even a drop-out is an Alumnus (this has been argued out extensively in the past) and in any case has more connection with the University that most recipients of Honorary Degrees, let alone someone who has not yet received an Honorary Degree. So where is the "Administrator Review" that you were talking about? Since when you became an Administrator?! You just removed it like that?! You don't even wanna sign your post now?! For now, I will drop it, because the degree is not yet awarded. But you can count on the fact that I will come back and add his name on the list on May 17th, 2009 TheAsianGURU (talk) 19:40, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I urge you to look carefully at the list of people here. Almost none of the people who have been awarded Honorary Degrees are included. Only those who also have a direct connection other than the Honorary is listed. Honorary degree alone is simpply not sufficient connection to any university for inclusion in such a list. Rafic Baha El Deen Al-Hariri Notable Trustee, Alumni, Donor and leading political figure in middle east politics.

[edit]

Rafic Baha El Deen Al-Hariri, (Board of Trustee 1990-2003, named an Associate Founder of the University,Doctor of Laws and Honorary Trustee) Prime Minister of Lebanon; 1992-1998 & 2000-2004 [quote]""Hariri began his relationship with Boston University in 1985 when the Hariri Foundation, which offers interest-free loans to Lebanese and Arab students pursuing advanced studies in the United States, sponsored 285 Lebanese students studying English at the University. A year later, President Emeritus John Silber nominated him for an honorary degree, and Hariri received a Doctor of Laws at Commencement in 1986 in recognition of “outstanding efforts to bring peace and stability to Lebanon and the Middle East.”

That same year, Hariri’s son, Baha’a (SMG’90), enrolled at the School of Management. When he graduated in 1990, the senior Hariri was elected to the Board of Trustees and was named an Associate Founder of the University. He served until 2003, when he became an Honorary Trustee.

Hariri’s philanthropy was extensive — in addition to his work with the Hariri Foundation, he built a university, a school, and a hospital in Lebanon and gave significant gifts to several major universities. In 1990, he pledged $10 million to Boston University for a new SMG building; construction began later that year, and the Rafik B. Hariri Building opened in 1996.""[/quote]

Notability?

[edit]

For a list of "notable" entries there are an awful people here who do not have Wikipedia articles. Some have further listdef such as "Fulbright Scholars" but cats like "Business" looks like its half non-notables. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 23:17, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notability - again

[edit]

Just reiterating the message above. All redlinked names must either have their own Wikipedia pages, or be referenced to reliable sources. their connection to the university must be clearly established. Entries that are unsourced very soon will be removed. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:18, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Update

[edit]

All redlinked unsourced entries now removed per above. United States Congresspeople must be sourced and their connection with the university documented, but this should be relatively easy to do. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 18:20, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
