A number of songs, particularly in the 1990s, received significant airplay on the radio but never appeared on the Billboard Hot 100. This is because these songs had no commercial single available for record buyers, and Billboard had a rule that such songs were ineligible to chart on the Hot 100 (this changed on December 5, 1998). These songs, however, did appear on a component chart known as Hot 100 Airplay — today, this is known as the Radio Songs chart, and the current chart can be found online here. As for inclusion of these "airplay only" songs in this article, please note this article is a record of all the songs that appeared in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 proper during the year indicated, meaning if it appeared only on a component chart (including Hot 100 Airplay) but not the main chart, it does not belong in the article.
For the record, five songs never released as singles managed to make the top 10 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart during 1996, and will be included below for reference. These appear in Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual 1955–2011 (ISBN0-89820-193-4) and are clearly marked as "airplay only" charting songs. The peak position shown applies to the Hot 100 Airplay chart—if not indicated, the peak happened in a year other than 1996. The year(s) column shows every year a song appeared in the top 10 on Hot 100 Airplay; a year is included if it involves any chart dated in that year. As the songs below did not appear on the main Hot 100 chart, they are not to be placed in the article.
