Multi-platform vs. Specific
[edit]At the top of this article we list multi-platform software, then go on to include them in sections (sometimes?) - should this be the case or should multi-platform be self-contained? I can see a valid point for retaining them (i.e. looking for Falken I might not realize it was multi-platform and jump straight to MSDOS), but is the redundancy needed? Do non-BBS apps belong here?
[edit]I've just created an article about Squish (fidonet), which wasn't a BBS application in itself, but was used in conjunction with quite a lot of BBS systems in general. Does it belong as part of this list, or is the list supposed to be BBS applications only? Izogi 23:53, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
- This is strictly a list of BBS software, not BBS-related applications. I'm afraid that adding peripheral software would only make this even more unruly. —RaD Man (talk) 07:57, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- Terminate wasn't a BBS program. It was a client for connecting to BBSs.
- Insanity BBS wasn't a real program. The guy who ran Insane Utopia would always use a hex editor to change things and renamed Renegade to Insanity BBS. --Nnrenegade (talk) 18:24, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- What makes this any different than the BBS Software folder on textfiles.com? If we're going far enough to essentially replicate what's there, we may as well made the list tabular and let pages branch off that. Otherwise, bbsfriends will show up and it'll be a listing of old systems after a while where x did y to z. - And Atari people, don't forget to add OASIS/OASIS IV and Jr. to the list. Believe there was an ST version as well. Jfalcon (talk) 10:11, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Linkfarm
[edit]The external links here, other than those in the External links section, should be removed. See WP:EL and WP:NOT#LINK. --Ronz 01:02, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
PCBoard
[edit]I was a developer at Clark Development Company, home of PCBoard. I would recommend removing PCBoard from the Windows BBS Software section, as there was never a native Win16 or Win32 version of PCBoard. In addition, I would recommend adding PCBoard to the OS/2 BBS Section, as there was a native port of it.

phpBB
[edit]Does that really belong in the BBS page? I don't think web forums when I think BBS, but I could be wrong. I've left it in there for now. Wardrich (talk) 09:51, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
MACOS
[edit]I added mention of MACOS to Apple II's GBBS Pro since my BBS, The Tower of Babble, (1990-1995) as well as several other BBSes in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area used this Modified ACOS version. Other MACOS BBSes: The Trading Post, The Keep, Lightning Systems, and others I no longer recall.ReveurGAM (talk) 03:05, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Merge proposal
[edit]- Oppose merging List of bulletin board systems into List of BBS software. They are two distinctly different things and should remain separate. A list of notable BBS's is a different topic from the software that runs them. -- OlEnglish (Talk) 22:42, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- I removed the merge tag. Pcap ping 20:07, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Need to stick to BBS definition
[edit]As defined in the BBS article, BBS software should support posting of bulletins and other forms of exchange of text information between users. Software that supports only downloading and uploading do not belong in this list. Software like ASCII Express can be attached to BBS software, and add additional protocol features. BUT, as a stand-alone product it is not BBS software. This list should only include complete products. We shouldn't be tracking plug-ins or add-ons. I've already removed the apps I know about in the Apple II section. Before restoring these applications, please respond here. Groink (talk) 00:58, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- Where do you recommend they go then? List of software for BBS's? List of BBS add-on's maybe? Do you think we even have enough content/notability to make up a separate list for these types of software? -- OlEnglish (Talk) 01:39, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
ORACOMM
[edit]This is what I believe was a major BBS software system, capable of multi-line operation and it is not in the list. I remember being a member of several BBS communities using ORACOMM BBS software. Also, I am trying to find references to it, especially to find out more about the software's internals, as one rumor going around about it was that it was named as it was because it used early versions of the Oracle Database for its internal bookkeeping functions. Instead of possibly adding inaccurate content about this, I would prefer if someone who had experience as an Oracomm SYSOP add the section for it. ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Elegy (talk • contribs) 04:17, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Any BBS for android 7"?
[edit]Android wifi seemed to be a good platform for BBS as a data center? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.115.61.37 (talk) 10:26, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
BBS Software that ran on the Acorn BBC Microcomputer
[edit]There were quite a few BBSs that ran on the BBC Micro.... odd that none are mentioned.... Rebroad (talk) 19:55, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
BBS Software that are missing and should be added to the list
[edit]BBBS and PC-Express should be added. I found a webpage with lots of BBS-software listed: https://wiki.edunitas.com/IT/en/114-10/PegaSys_115_eduNitas.html Earg (talk) 03:43, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
