Talk:List of Australians imprisoned or executed abroad/Archive 1

  • The title of this article (Australians in international prisons) conflicts with part of the opening paragraph that includes executed Australians. Split the executed into its own article, e.g. List of Australians executed on foreign soil?
  • The explicit petition links are not NPOV. If the prisoner has their own article, a link to that article (which probably links to the petition) would be better.
  • Luke Carroll could not possibly have been sentenced on September 23, 2005 as claimed. I'm writing this on August 17, 2005 and, as far as I know, time travel is still impossible.
  • Thomas McCosker has been released. Should he get deleted from this list? If so, does he get to join some list of former overseas prisoners? Andjam
  • Kay Danes of Foreign Prisoner Support Service is attempting to use Wikipedia to advertise herself. Wikipedia is not link farm, especially not for self-promoters like Danes. Have a look at what she did to Stephen Sutton: http://machinegunkeyboard.com/?p=90

Spamming with Stephen Sutton

[edit]

Are the admins aware of the chronic spamming with the Stephen Sutton section yet? Andjam 14:34, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

David Hicks

[edit]

Strictly speaking, although David Hicks is in the custody of United American authorities, he is not in United States (Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist noted that the detainees are not on American soil). The entry should read Cuba, or its official name: 'US Naval Station Guantanamo Bay'. Kransky 08:22, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a note alongside his entry reflecting his situation. -- Longhair 08:45, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Iraq detainee

[edit]

Ahmad Jamal is described as being captured in Iraq by Iraqi forces in December 2004. Shouldn't he be listed under Iraq, not the United States? (I recognise that some don't view Iraq as a sovereign country, but this article isn't the place to be arguing that) Also, the hyperlink is to a different Ahmad Jamal. Discussion removed

[edit]

I have removed discussion between anons and User:Diana Elgar. Wikipedia is not usenet. The discussion is of course visible in history if anyone wishes to review. Future discussions should focus on the article content and refrain for personal attacks or even comments about other editors - anon or otherwise. I have added the talkheader template for a reminder on talk page etiquette. --User:AYArktos | Talk 20:26, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"international" prisons?

[edit]

I suppose most prisons are international in that they hold prisoners of different nationalities. Here, "international" just seems to mean "outside Australia". Any objection to a move to "List of Australians imprisoned outside Australia"? -- Hoary 05:22, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the current title is a problem, and page moves are a bit of a nuiscance. Andjam 06:57, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
They're certainly a nuisance when links aren't fixed accordingly. Of course we -- most definitely including I, unless others beat me to it -- would fix all the links from articles (not from signed comments on talk pages, etc.). -- Hoary 08:58, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think the title inappropriate, this article is about Australians imprisoned in places other than Australia and hence I concur with the proposed page move. "International" is not meaningful. As the article had been somewhat controversial until recently I thought any editing should not be bold. I suspect now is a good time to move. Page moves aren't much of a nuisanceat all. We should wait another 24 hours or so to allow other interested editors to comment--A Y Arktos 07:34, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I created the article, and always pondered over a more suitable article name. Hoary has it. I agree with the proposed move. -- Longhair 07:50, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What about "List of Australians imprisoned overseas" (a bit shorter and saves saying Australia twice)? -- Iantalk 01:57, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rename the article?

[edit]

Shall we go ahead and rename the article as per the above discussion or is the current naming ok as is? I still prefer renaming to List of Australians imprisoned outside Australia unless there's a more suitable recommendation. To avoid overusing Australia as per Ianbrown's idea, another proposal is List of Australians imprisoned abroad? -- Longhair 03:01, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see this as a non-issue. The current and both of the proposed ones above are OK with me and I wouldn't object to whatever you decide. -- Iantalk 04:59, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Columns

[edit]

I dislike the columns that have appeared here. The article now looks cluttered and is hard to read. Any other views? -- Iantalk 01:57, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I much prefer the original list without columns. Most lists on Wikipedia seem to function fine without formatting into columns. -- Longhair 20:59, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A "Drug Offences" section

[edit]

The table has: Bushrangers, Convicts, Criminals, Murderers, Serial killers, Prisoners. The cases that draw lots of international focus and criticism are Non-violent drug offenders so I would recommend such a catagory be added. Most of the people listed on this page seem to be in that catagory. Jeff Carr 01:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The table (or template to refer to the 'table' using its' correct name) has its' very own talk page here. I'm the original creator of the template you refer to, and whilst the template caused a slight bit of controversy when first introduced, I still see a need for it. I am intending to rework the template when I have more free time available. I'm happy to work with you to bring the template to an agreeable standard. Let's move the discussion to the relevant talk page I linked above. This page is for discussion of Australians in international prisons and the article itself in particular. -- Longhair 03:21, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
