Rita-Donna and Mr. Jingles Problems

[edit]

Few users are arguing about this situation. I personally believe the characters should be listed as per this revision : https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_American_Horror_Story_cast_members&oldid=919668828 as it aligns properly with how the characters are listed in previous seasons. The way we list the charcaters is based on what identity the audience are given with in the early episodes. If Ross' character reveal was in episode 1, then there's no need to place Rita, but in this case, she was Rita for 2 episodes.

For Angelica Ross : She originally played as Rita in episodes 1 & 2 before revealing that she had been masquerading and is actually known as Donna Chambers. This is similar to almost all the cast from Roanoke, where majority of them played as actors first, before the big reveal where we learn that the characters they played were characters in a series. Each cast member technically still played 2 characters. Sarah Paulson played as the character Shelby while her actual character is Audrey.

For John Carroll Lynch : In this first 3 episodes, he is commonly known as Mr. Jingles, not Benjamin Ritcher. Similar to how in Hotel, Gaga portrayed Elizabeth Johnson but is listed as The Countess as she was mostly known as it and Bates' Roanoke character as The Butcher, rather than Thomasin White.

I'm gonna ping User:TedEdwards to give his share on this situation as the page has gone back to the previous revision before mine. 60.52.54.29 (talk) 04:02, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For Roanoke, from an in-universe perspective, Sarah Paulson played Audrey Tindall who played Shelby Miller. But Wikipedia must be written from an out-universe perspective, so while when describing Audrey on this website we say "she is the actor who plays Shelby", we list them as two separate characters, as in the show Audrey and Shelby are not the same person, and are instead two characters played by Sarah Paulson. This is different to all the other cases listed i.e. Rita is the same character as Donna, because Rita is Donna's pseudonym. But as you correctly point out, Donna was known as Rita for two episodes, so because of that both should be listed, while making clear they are the same character.
Unfortunately, I'm way too busy to edit Wikipedia regularly, if at all, and I probably won't see any reply to this message. --TedEdwards 20:17, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone explain?

[edit]

Gabourey Sidibe and Jamie Brewer are either listed as special guests or recurring characters, despite the fact that they are both main characters in the third season. Why is this? Not listing them as main characters for those seasons is ridiculous and smacks of racism/ableism. 72.23.207.138 (talk) 15:27, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Years late but Gabourey Sidibe and Jamie Brewer were in fact only special guest starring (Sidibe) and guest starring (Brewer) in Coven. This is mainly for contractual reasons and definitely not racism or ableism. In Sidibe's case, I also think being listed as a special guest star is a prestigious title, as it means you have some clout in the acting industry. Moreover, using your argument, why then have black actors such as Angela Bassett, Adina Porter, Cuba Gooding Jr., André Holland, Angelica Ross, and Rachel Hilson been cast as main roles in some of their respective seasons? Lastly, Jamie Brewer has appeared in five seasons, so it makes no sense that there is ableism going on if she is repeatedly cast. 222.152.234.9 (talk) 21:54, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
