Natalie Portman
[edit]Can Natalie Portman be considered of Asian descent? She is from Israel, but her ancestry is Austria/Russia/Poland/Romania, according to her article. If we're going to count people born in Asian countries, then how about Vivian Leigh and Julie Christie who were born in India? ... discospinster talk 17:06, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
- Olivia de Havilland was born in Japan. Does she also belong on this list? ... discospinster talk 20:03, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- To my understanding, Asian descent has to do with ethnicity so only being born in Asia wouldn't be enough. Because of her Ashkenazi heritage Portman is not eligible for "Asian descent", but would be eligible for the list on "Asian Academy winners/nominees" due to her dual citizenship. I opened a discussion on this subject (how to distinguish those two and who's eligible) on the "Asian" list's TalkPage, see Talk:List of Asian Academy Award winners and nominees. Please have look, would be interested in your opinion. ... Milkyjoeboosh (talk) 03:32, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
As stated, this page is for people of Asian ethnicity. People like Natalie and Julia, who, although born in Asia and in the case of Natalie, holds citizenship to an Asian country (Israel), are ultimately of European ethnicity. Actually, @Discospinster: - Vivien Leigh could count. She was born/raised in India and according to her article, she was partially Armenian or Indian, both Asian ethnicities. Though maybe @Milkyjoeboosh: could give the final say on this because her article indicates that this is only a possibility. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 22:53, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Clear Looking Glass: Oh my, what an honour to get final say ;-). I'm no expert on Vivian Leigh though. My take would be to leave her out as her article is not conclusive enough: Though her maternal grandfather is stated to be Anglo-Indian, this actually refers to two groups "those with mixed Indian and British ancestry and people of British descent born or residing in India". Plus it's also inconclusively discussed on her talk page - if even the Leigh afficionados cannot come to a conclusion I wouldn't feel confident to give a verdict. I'd say: If in doubt, leave it out - until further evidence. Milkyjoeboosh (talk) 13:10, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Milkyjoeboosh: - Thanks for the reply! I just read her talk page and did some searching online, and I also found nothing that was set in stone. I've seen several debates/arguments of her ethnic background, some state that her family origins were fully British/Irish, though others claim she had either Indian, Armenian or even Bengali ancestry. So yes, probably best to not put here unless conclusive evidence were to ever come out. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 23:28, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
