Adam Morrison
[edit]Should we list him in "Going overseas" section? Currently, he does not meet the conditions, but the conditions are arbitrarily added just to limit the list from including former NBA players signed overseas. However, I changed my mind about Morrison because his last league is NBA, unlike Sean Williams (basketball) who played in the D-League before signed with an Israeli team. Williams was listed by SI and ESPN in their "Going overseas" list, but they missed the fact that Williams already left NBA for other leagues. I propose a slight change in the list's criteria to include free agents who haven't played in any other league before they are signed overseas. Any thoughts? — MT (talk) 08:41, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- I decided to remove him since his going overseas didnt impact any NBA teams. He wasnt playing for any of them, so its not like any team "lost" him or the NBA is "losing" him.—Bagumba (talk) 09:48, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, I just think this might be a way to include User:Maccabit's edit, but I don't mind excluding Morrison anyway. — MT (talk) 15:15, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Seems an IP is edit warring over this. I dont mind discussing, but will remove if no compelling reason is given other than to collect trivia.—Bagumba (talk) 20:01, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- I reverted. He should not be included. He wasn't in the league last season and thus any subsequent transaction involving him has no relation to the NBA.—Chris!c/t 20:42, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Flags
[edit]Do we really need all the flags in front of player names? Apart from the draft and going overseas section, players' nationalities are not relevant at all. Furthermore the flags are not accompanied with country names which violates MOS:FLAG. I'm thinking about removing the flags from all section apart from the draft and going overseas section. On those two section, I propose to remove US flags and add a note at the top "All players are American unless noted otherwise".
- All players are American unless noted otherwise
Player | Date signed | New team | New country | NBA team |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nenad Krstić | June 22 | CSKA Moscow | Russia | Boston Celtics |
Mustafa Shakur | June 27 | Pau-Orthez | France | Washington Wizards |
David Andersen | June 28 | Montepaschi Siena | Italy | New Orleans Hornets |
Hilton Armstrong | June 30 | ASVEL Basket | France | Atlanta Hawks |
DaJuan Summers | July 3 | Montepaschi Siena | Italy | Detroit Pistons |
Any thoughts? — MT (talk) 04:16, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- If nationality is relevant to a table, we should be consistent in that table and either have flags for all or none. I'll have to go and reread MOS on why we ever have flags at all aside from eye candy.—Bagumba (talk) 00:45, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Your suggestion doesn't fully comply with MOS:FLAG. I think the sensible thing to do is to add a nationality column for relevant tables. All entries should be consistent: either have flags or don't. I disagree that flags are eye candies. They allow quick identification for players' respective nationality.—Chris!c/t 02:22, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, scratch that suggestion. I'll hold off the changes in the draft and going overseas section until a solution can be found. The tables are already wide enough without additional nationality column. But what about the flags in trades and free agents list? Are they relevant at all? Anyway, I've gone ahead and remove flags from front office section, the nationalities of the head coach and general managers are definitely irrelevant. — MT (talk) 02:52, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- I dont see how they are relevant to trades. For FA, unless a foreign player can come into NBA as a FA, I dont think it is relevant there either. Dont all players have to declare themselves for NBA draft to get into NBA?—Bagumba (talk) 06:09, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Let me elaborate on my previous cmt. Flags are eyecandy w/o the name of the country, as most people wouldnt recognize a majority of the flags. With the country name present, it can facilitate easier visual mapping to fellow countrymen.—Bagumba (talk) 06:05, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Sure it allows for a quick identification of players' nationality, but I don't think their nationality is relevant to the transactions? If we didn't even have flags in the current roster because it's irrelevant and could be troublesome for players with multiple nationalities, I believe that the same reasons apply here, except in the "Going overseas" and "Draft" sections. — MT (talk) 15:18, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- I think the indentation threw you off. I was responding to Chris' response on eye candy, not advocating flags for all transactions. See my above comment (indented one more level to the right) for thoughts on FA.—Bagumba (talk) 17:00, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- I was responding to Chris' response on eye candy as well. Something I forgot to say before in my earlier response. Actually, I did forget that I already responded to Chris before. So yes, I'm a little bit confused. Sorry for any confusion. — MT (talk) 21:25, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Since there was consensus to remove flags from teams' season rosters and all-time rosters, the flags in this article should also be removed.—Bagumba (talk) 23:59, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- I don't mind removing the flags, but what about the flags in Going overseas and Draft sections? — MT (talk) 14:23, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- I left those and the retirement section for now. If they stay, we need to add the country names. Should we start a convention and mimic Dallas_Mavericks_all-time_roster#International_players where all mention of players nationality should be in a single section? We can add a link or a see also to List_of_foreign_NBA_players in that section.—Bagumba (talk) 19:06, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- For draft we can also say that 2011 NBA Draft already has the info, so dont duplicate the flags here. Going overseas I would only leave to show players going back to home country. That can be just a footnote w/o a flag. Retirement I'm inclined to remove also, unless we want to show the outflow of nationals.—Bagumba (talk) 19:12, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Players who changed overseas team
[edit]If a player, such as Patrick Mills, who had already signed overseas, left his team and signed with another one, do we need to list it here? — MT (talk) 04:47, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe you could explain things in a footnote? Zagalejo^^^ 04:56, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
Tracy McGrady
[edit]He signed with the Hawks. Sources: Detroit Free Press, ESPN, Sports Illustrated.

- It'd be helpful if to provide the source in the future, e.g. [1]. However, we usually wait for an official announcement from team.—Bagumba (talk) 21:59, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
waivers and free agency
[edit]Note that waived players are not immediately free agents until they clear waivers after 48 hours. I've updated the amnesty players bios that were marked as FA, leaving the team field in the infobox blank.—Bagumba (talk) 20:06, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
How should we deal with the Jeff Green situation?
[edit]Because he didn't pass the physical, his contract with the Celtics was voided.[2] Should we note that in the table somehow?—Chris!c/t 03:34, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- Voided contract means that he is still a Restricted Free Agent. We should put him back in unsigned free agents and probably add a note that he has a contract but was voided due to the physical. I was thinking about the same thing with Chuck Hayes, whose contract also voided. — MT (talk) 06:24, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Peja Stojakovic
[edit]He has just announced his retirement, someone should add him to the retirement section. I would but i'm not a competent editor. http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/peja-stojakovic-retires-121911 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.96.51.58 (talk) 02:08, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
Training camp cuts
[edit]The section Training camp cuts says "rookies who were invited to the training camp but were cut before the start of the season." Where do we put non-rookies like Gerald Green who got cut during camp?—Bagumba (talk) 22:41, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- I initially add that line to separate which players should be listed on Training camp cuts or Free agency and Waived. After all, a training camp invite is a free agent signed non-guaranteed contract, while training camp cut is player waived during the training camp. I have several proposal on how to separate this sections.
- Remove the Training camp cuts altogether and move the players to both Free agency and Waived list
- Restrict the Training camp cuts to only rookies that were signed and waived during training camp, and put non-rookies on both Free agency and Waived list
- Restrict the Training camp cuts to only rookies and non-rookies that were signed and waived during training camp
- Move any players cut during training camp to Training camp cuts
- In my opinion, the most viable options are #2 and #3. In #3, Lakers camp invitees Gerald Green and Malcolm Thomas would be placed in Training camp cuts, along with several veteran players who are trying to return to the NBA, such as Devean George and Jake Voskuhl. In the #2, Green and other veteran players would be placed in Free agency and Waived, while Thomas would be placed in Training camp cuts. I'm indifferent about these two options, but the #2 would put more attention to veteran players who are trying out in the training camp, and more information about their whereabouts before returning to the NBA. On the other hand, #3 would reduce the length of Free agency and Waived list by not listing players who failed to make the opening day roster.
- I did not favor #4 (which is used in previous year's article), because this means that players who were on the roster last season could be placed in this section, such as Stephen Graham or Jannero Pargo. I believe if a Training camp cuts section should exists, it should be exclusively for players who were signed and waived during training camp and preseason, not for players who are already with the team before the training camp began. Anyway, I've hide the line for awhile until we sort this out. Any comments? — MT (talk) 03:38, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- I like #3 as it is a bit easier to manage that #2, not having to look up years of service. #1 doesnt show inflow of new players into NBA. The fact that an "Established" players was cut will be lost if we put in #4, e.g. Baron Davis would go there among all the people with little or no experience.—Bagumba (talk) 04:06, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, if we're going for #3, should Thomas, Green, Voskuhl, George and other training camp invites who failed to make the roster still be listed in the signed Free agency list? I personally don't think they should be there because it would make that list very long with more than 60 training camp invites from D-League while only a handful of them will make it to the opening day roster. — MT (talk) 04:20, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- That was going to be my next question. Ultimately, the FA signing list should be for players that made the NBA roster. Should we go further and say they need to play 1 game. What about someone that gets assigned to the D-League all year after signing?—Bagumba (talk) 04:30, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- I think as long as a player made the opening day roster it's fine to include him there. There are several players on last year's end of season roster who never played a game (i.e. Robert Vaden, Magnum Rolle) who never played any NBA game until this date, but still has a mention in this article. — MT (talk) 04:49, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
