Claratron?
[edit]The Credits section mentions an instrument called a "claratron", played by Good. I can't find anything on this instrument online, and the section isn't referenced. Does anyone know what this is and how it got in the article?
I'd like to remove it if nobody has any useful leads. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 14:02, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Revirvlkodlaku. Given that there is quite a lot of brass, woodwind stuff etc on the album, best guess would be that it should be a Clarion (instrument), a type of fanfare trumpet, but even this seems a bit out there. What does it say in the liner sleeve for credits? My copy is packed away somewhere, I'll try digging it out later when the rest of the house is awake (it's 05:38 in the morning where I am right now!) - Actually, this could be something that Good did himself. On Spirit of Eden, one of the musicians created his own instrument called a Shozygs...... The joy of all things (talk) 04:41, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @The joy of all things, thanks for the response. When I searched for "claratron", clarion was the first instrument that came up, so that is definitely my leading theory as well.
- If we approach "claratron" as a portmanteau rather than a typo, the best I can come up with is a combination of clarinet and mellotron, and since it would be hard to combine the two into one, perhaps it could be a mellotron that produces a clarinet-like sound?
- I'm leaning toward this being a typo, however. I don't have a physical copy of the album, so I'll wait to see what you find at a more reasonable hour. Cheers! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 05:04, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Revirvlkodlaku Nope. It definitely states Claratron next to Matthew Good's name on tracks 1, 3, and 9.[1]
- @The joy of all things on the liner sleeve or in the Amazon link you added? I can't see it there...Revirvlkodlaku (talk)
- Revirvlkodlaku, sorry, no wouldn't as it's akin to me citing a non-online book. I can take images and send or upload, but I can absolutely guarantee that it says Claratron on the liner notes. I still have no idea what it is. The joy of all things (talk) 15:10, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

- @The joy of all things oh no, that's totally fine, I believe you. Thanks for looking into that, it's a big help! I think I'll add a note to the article explaining that it's an otherwise unheard-of instrument. Cheers! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 16:19, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
