This article offers a broad overview of light harvesting materials from photosynthetic biological systems to bioinspired and biomimetic materials that can be employed for artificial photosynthesis. The article covers the background on light harvesting materials, the photochemical processes of light harvesting materials, light harvesting in the molecular machinery of phototrophic organisms, synthetically designed light harvesting materials, and the applications of light harvesting materials (photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and photodynamic therapy). This initial article has a bibliography of 47 references from primary literature sources as well as literature reviews. These sources allow for the coverage of a large scope of light harvesting systems, both biological and synthetic, as well as their various applications.
