Re refstyle toptag
[edit]Hi K.l.baehr ( and ping Raevan2011) and thanks for creating. Refs will need fixing - in particular the work credited to Payne is actually authored by Weaver - Payne is the editor. Also, the same reference shouldn't be individually entered multiple times. If multiple pages are used, then either a single ref with a page range in the pages parameter can be used, or individual pages can be specified in one of another ways including Template:sfn - please see WP:IBID. ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 23:13, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: I'll revert the tag removal as I believe the issues are still there. For Refstyle, both Beaman (1989) and the two separate refs for Payne (2009) don't provide any page numbers, it's possible that Payne was editor rather than writer(s) for articles within that work. For Primary take "Unbeknownst to Beaman, she would work on details of a map of the Alaska Purchase in which she would draw Saint Paul Island (Alaska) and St. George Island (Alaska), her future home for a year" or "Beaman never agreed with the hunting of seals for their pelts, yet she was acutely aware that the islands could not support the abundance of these mammals". (I'll add pointer to this in comment beside the tags but won't re-revert). ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 02:46, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hydronium Hydroxide: Thanks for your explanations. I removed the tags as I saw work had been done on the referencing and noticed that while some of the sources could be considered primary, it seems to me that commentaries of her work in academic sources are valid for compiling a biography of someone who died almost 90 years ago, especially as her written accounts are what led to her recognition. You should bear in mind that the reason for discouraging primary sources is essentially to prevent living persons writing about themselves, their contacts, their achievements or their works. This said, as always improvements could still be made to the article.--Ipigott (talk) 08:37, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: I've moved from toptags (which probably aren't necessary here) to section tags which make things a little less ugly while still leaving things flagged. (Acknowledging that primary statements can be fine - eg "... Beaman described herself as...") The issue might actually be slight OR more than primary but verification would be needed, and the original author has not edited since their course. ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 11:12, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
