Wade-Giles or pinyin?

[edit]

In life, Prof. Li always wrote his name in Wade-Giles Romanization as "Li Fang-Kuei". He never used the pinyin form. This is confirmed by all three of his children. Perhaps out of respect to him, the primary entry should be as he used it and the pinyin form be secondary?

I agree. How can we go about changing the default title? -anon -- 05:00, 22 January 2008 72.76.155.160

Sino-Tibetan -r and -l

[edit]

I have a note I just ran across that LFK had an article about final -r and -l in Sino-Tibetan that was published posthumously in 2005. I wonder if anyone has heard of this and has a proper citation.--Tibetologist (talk) 12:06, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Li Fang-KueiLi FangguiWP:NC/ZH. Ngrams seems to sign off on this, and the other reason given for its move to the Wade–Giles rendering in 2008 is irrelevant. Remsense ‥  06:34, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose -- The majority of his career was in the United States, and Wade-Giles was what was used in the United States during his lifetime. The Pinyin transcription system wasn't even invented until he was already 56 years old, and it wasn't at all commonly used in the United States until near the end of his life. I see no need for imposing a retroactive change like this. AnonMoos (talk) 08:14, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
