[edit]Thanks Cormaggio. The source for these comments on Talleyrand, the name Levenshulme and the back entries is my memories of what I was told as a child 50 years ago. I am confident that my memory is accurate of what I was told - but I'm far from confident that the people who told me had got it right. Hence my choice of wording.
As a newcomer to Wikipedia, how should this kind of thing be attributed? It's genuine information. I'm happy to put my name to it. It might well be true, but I can't produce written proof - I would't even know where to go to look for proof. Yet I do not think it would be a good thing to loose this information. Cerddaf 15.8.2006
The following was in this article as "unverified local memories" [1]:
- "The district of East Levenshulme used to be known as Talleyrand, and it was said the French Statesman Talleyrand once stayed there during his exile from France, presumably during 1792-1794.
- The name is supposed to mean "Town on the Watermeadows". Hulme (similar to the German Heim) is a common element in local placenames, meaning Village or Settlement.
- The typical older housing of Levenshulme consists of terraced houses with wide back entries. This is supposed to be because of an old bylaw of the Levenshulme local authority that every terraced house had to have access by a horse and cart to the back door, so that rubbish could be removed without taking it through the house."
I've replaced this with the {{fact}} template - sources would be appreciated. Thanks. Cormaggio @ 15:56, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
There are no 'student' pubs in Levenshulme since I last checked, although there is a small amount of students living in the area, that drink in a few of the (slightly less threatening)pubs
Still no student pubs, and fewer pubs in general following the closure of several during the recession. Have added the minor geographical detail that the area is also adjacent to Fallowfield. I am thinking that some more information about the remaining pubs would be a useful addition? Matthew Frank Ball (talk) 20:12, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Recreation section
[edit]I've added a recreation section in which I intend to give some of the history of the 3 parks, library and baths. If anyone wishes to help please feel free :) ---- WebHamster 19:37, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
A street with "No Name"
[edit]Check this article, and please insert in the wiki page in the right place, because it seems tourist attraction.
http://domsweirdnews.blogspot.com/2008/01/street-with-no-name.html
"Despite being created more than 160 years ago the street has never had an official title. Neighbours began to refer to it as The Street With No Name and over the decades it stuck."

- Will do. I've found a reliable source for it as the blog one couldn't be used. --WebHamster 17:05, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- There's also a free photo of it[2] which we could use. I hear that they have since put it higher up on the wall, due to it being stolen. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:39, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yup I've already included the nicking of the sign. It seems that when I took the included pic of the railway station it must have been just after it was stolen as you can see the black name plate with no text on it. When I get a chance I'll get another pic taken of the currrent positioning. --WebHamster 17:44, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

- That photo is now long out of date, with the sign (plate) located just below the notice board. It seems that there is no photo that comes up to WP requirements, but for info the current Google Maps street view dated November 2020 shows that the current sign is located about 35cm/12 inches above the "Levenshulme Station" sign https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.4441649,-2.1929858,3a,75y,87.1h,84.48t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sD3AcMzfaD_S0pDuEmvIE3g!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en 2600:1700:EA01:1090:9839:3E2C:891F:A5F2 (talk) 06:13, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
