Catholic?

[edit]

Our friend Defteri objects to my mentioning in the opening sentence that the Leonine Prayers (and the Low Masses after which they were said) were a Catholic phenomenon. To my mind, this is an innocuous piece of information - and, indeed, it seems positively strange not to mention their Catholicity in the opening sentence of this article (in a general encyclopaedia). With respect, objecting that this is tautologous seems pedantic to me.

I'm also uncomfortable with Lima's suggestion that the Latin Rite be mentioned in the opening sentence. To my mind, this is a step too far, and again seems unduly pedantic. It must also be remembered that "Mass" is a western term which is not in general use in reference to non-Latin Rite liturgies.Shoneen (talk) 20:29, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, Leonine Prayers and Low Mass are (or more strictly, apart from the few cases there of celebrations of Tridentine Mass, were a Catholic phenomenon, more strictly a Latin-Rite phenomenon. They were also a Christian phenomenon. Why choose "Catholic" among all those, when "Catholic" is too wide (since it encompasses also Eastern rites that did not have either Low Mass or Leonine Prayers), even if it is not as wide as "Christian"? On the whole I prefer Defteri's solution to mine: all and every one of those adjectives are tautological. I therefore support Defteri's straightforward edit. On going to edit the article back to Defteri's, I found that we can avoid tautology (to suit Defteri) and, hopefully, overcome Shoneen's problem also by specifying who prescribed the prayers. Lima (talk) 21:14, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A Solomonic compromise - many thanks.Shoneen (talk) 08:23, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
