Early life
[edit]I removed "as well as being a contemporary of Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen" because it has no relevance to Brittan's life (early or otherwise). I also took out the parentheses enclosing the stuff about his chairmanships because that is relevant. 213.122.50.2 (talk) 21:24, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Parliamentary privileged reference
[edit]Truthful reports of what was said in Parliament are of course contitutionally protected from actions for libel. Hansard and the Daily Telegraph are reliable sources. This stuff is notable because a very important child abuse inquiry's chair, Lady Woolf, has been asked to stand down by MPs and victims because of her social relationship with Lord B and his wife. Straw Cat (talk) 10:25, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
- The WP:BLP policy exists for reasons other than merely the avoidance of actions for libel. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:30, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
- As Demiurge1000 would know!!! LOL 81.170.122.230 (talk) 14:58, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Wanless
[edit]from the bbc - 'peter wanless report said it was impossible to say whether files were removed to cover up abuse - but found nothing to support such a claim.' - and also from that bbc report 'the Home Office's top civil servant, Mark Sedwill, found that copies of Mr Dickens's material had "not been retained" but that Lord Brittan had acted appropriately in dealing with the allegations.' I have added these two bits of info but demiurge says he cant comprehend my edits - which I find incomprehensible. I have strung two sentences from the bbc report together - really not complicated. demiurge seems to me to be editorializing with his edit saying wanless 'endorsd' anything - he said things were such a mess it was difficult to discover anything definitive. At the time of his death, Brittan had been under active investigation by the Metropolitan Police Service http://www.exaronews.com/articles/5464/leon-brittan-was-under-met-probe-over-claims-of-child-sex-abuse
This suggests that the claims of a 'smear campaign' may be less than accurate. 121.45.236.41 (talk) 07:43, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
- They might, but we should continue to state that that is what his family has said. It's not for Wikipedia to decide whether the claims are true; we merely state was has been reported.
- We don't need to use the Exaro citation you give, because we already have the citation from yesterday's Independent on Sunday reporting that the claims against Brittan have now been explicitly made. -- Alarics (talk) 10:01, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
BLPSOURCES edit
[edit]Does BLPSOURCES mean that the following from 'Personal Life and Death' should be removed? I'm confused...
He had no children of his own. He married at age 41 and is not known to have had any girlfriends up to that time.<ref>{{cite news |url= http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2922641/Tory-giant-dogged-lurid-rumours-years-Leon-Brittan-haunted-wild-allegations-just-unfounded-smears-enemies.html |title= Tory giant dogged by lurid rumours |work= Daily Mail |location= London |date=23 January 2015 |author= Adams, Guy; Wright, Stephen}}</ref>

Paedophile claims
[edit]Scotland Yard and the CPS have confirmed with the media, appearing in all national newspapers and televised news, they are investigating claims from several men, that Brittan sexually abused them at the age of 10 at Elm Guest House. Along with former Prime Minister Edward Heath. My comments keep being deleted by Philip Cross. On closer inspection, he has also been editing and defending known paedophile Lord Janner. I find this highly suspicious and have reported him to both the police and Wikipedia for scrutinisation. Igetwet (talk) 08:37, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- Don't be silly. Apart from anything else, Janner is not a "known paedophile". Nothing has yet been proved against any of these people. Assertions in Wikipedia must be based on reliable sources. -- Alarics (talk) 10:24, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
Will Igetwet now retract his statements and apologize? I'm utterly disgusted by this whole affair and the behaviour of the conspiracy theorists behind it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1812:2421:2B00:1128:84B0:BD39:EB64 (talk) 13:35, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
- I don't think he/she is going to apologise because he/she has been blocked from Wikipedia for making legal threats. -- Alarics (talk) 19:10, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
