Ethnicity
[edit]He was originally listed under Polish-Americans. Now he's been listed under Ukrainian-Americans. Has there been any definitive proof either way? I know it sounds Ukrainian to me personally, but I asked one of the Ukrainian genealogy specialists at Ukraine.com and they said it sounds Polish... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lvivske (talk • contribs) 18:32, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

- That's just a blog, not a credibile source. That same website says Wayne Gretzky is Ukrainian, when he's really Belorussian / Polish. It also says Roman POLAK is Ukrainian (when its Czech...with a name that screams Polish) and Travis Zajac (pure polishness). It seems they pick names at random and cross their fingers!--Lvivske (talk) 21:48, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

- That article states his grandmother was Polish, born in what is now western Ukraine (then under Polish rule) so no, newspaper is still wrong to say she was Ukrainian.--Lvivske (talk) 22:52, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- It doesn't say that anymore either, hard to keep up 99.225.145.80 (talk) 18:53, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm the one who edited it the other day ;-) --Lvivske (talk) 22:38, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

- In case we need it, the correct category is "Category:Ukrainian-Americans". Also, the Ukrainian-Americans article states that NY has the largest population of Ukrainians in America, so that does help the argument.--Lvivske (talk) 21:56, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- The Ukrainian Weekly has been published continuously since 1933. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewuoft (talk • contribs) 22:09, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Doesn't make it credible, nor do they know anything more about Lee Stempniak than you or I. Seems to me they saw -iak and assumed.--Lvivske (talk) 22:30, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Checked Ellis Island records, all but one (Polish) that immigrated to the US from Russia. None from Ukraine/Galicia/Austro-Hugary link. That said, all those from Russia put down their ethnicity as Polish or Russian-Polish.--Lvivske (talk) 23:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- He's American. ccwaters (talk) 00:01, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- No shit--Lvivske (talk) 00:40, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, its that simple. Why make *assumptions* based solely on his surname? His mother could be Brazilian for all we know. Personally, I can trace 6 ethnic heritages. If there's a reliable reference stating he has Polish/Russian/Ukrainian/whatever heritage than fine, otherwise he's simply "American". ccwaters (talk) 01:54, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- No shit--Lvivske (talk) 00:40, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- That's exactly why I made the discussion; to stop the presumptions others were making unless there is a credible source out there.--Lvivske (talk) 02:02, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
