Problems with the section on the treasure
[edit]35,000 coins of 6 grams each would be 210 kilograms. Even if this was pure gold, it would have a volume of 10.9 litres. To fit that in an 18 litre vase requires a packing efficiency of 61% which is remarkably high. (At the Straight Dope, typical coin packing ratio was once measured at just a smidgen over 50%.) However gold alloys with enough copper to appear reddish contain at least 50% copper and have a density below 12.5 g/cm3, hence the volume of 210 kg of those coins is 17 litres or more and it would have to be poured in molten to get it into an 18 litre vessel.
Thus made me somewhat suspicious, so I started checking the given references. Two are dead links, one reports the document is no longer available, and one is a picture of a generic stater, merely said to be of similar type to those from Ledringhem.
Hence I did a Google search on "Le trésor gaulois de Ledringhem" (which appears to be the usual French name), and found this link: http://didier.landron.perso.neuf.fr/landron/LeTresorDeLedringhem.html From that link, it would appear that:
- The original discoverers attempted to steal the treasure in secret, and consequently very little is known of the exact location or circumstances of discovery;
- The description of the vase is based on their recollections (made long after they had destroyed and disposed of it) of a single examination made in the dark;
- Only a few hundred coins have actually been recovered.
- The "35,000" coins is an estimate by Jeremy Landron, based on
- assuming the 18 litres to be correct;
- assuming the vase to have been totally full to the brim, a detail no-one ever claimed;
- assuming a packing ratio of 100%, presumably from simply not understanding packing ratios; and
- taking the mass of the coins from one example.
This is a pretty long bow to draw. I think it would be much more encyclopaedic to simply say that the number of coins is not known because most were sold before they came to the attention of the authorities. --86.171.224.118 (talk) 18:28, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
