[edit]I started this as follows:
- A lay theologian is a theologian who is not an ordained clergyman.
But the more modern meaning of "lay person" is one who lacks credentials in the field. Could that be what is sometimes (or usually) meant? Michael Hardy (talk) 00:26, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Theologians aren't divines, nor is there any need for them to be. It's not wrong to say 'lay theologian', but it makes as much sense to say a 'lay mathematician'.
If you wanted to say somebody who doesn't have academic qualifications, the better term would be an 'amateur theologian'. Fustbariclation (talk) 12:18, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Should this not be a Cat?
[edit]Should "lay theologian" not be a category? Springnuts (talk) 09:52, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
