The Lawrence Asylums were in fact orphanages and poor schools for the children of indigent British soldiers, and some other Europeans and a limited number of Eurasians. They were NOT 'military boarding schools' as said here in this article, in the standard sense and a couple of quotes are also cited out of context and partially. In this regard Henry Lawrence's own words are v clear in his letter to Gen Pollock, 23rd July 1845, when explaining his basic concept for establishing the schools in various hill stations of India then. This and other letters and diary entries held in the Henry Lawrence Collection, India Office Records, British Library, London, give considerable details(Ref/Acc No BL MSS Eur F 85).
