did he have to give up run for House seat in 1962 because of run for Senate seat?

I find: "He was not a candidate for renomination in 1962 to the Eighty-eighth Congress, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate." World War I service

Although Curtis served in the United States Navy during the World War I era, no reliable sources found as of yet state that he served overseas in a war zone during the war. From the sources reviewed, it appears that his service was all stateside. Accordingly, Category:American military personnel of World War I was not added to the article. Semper Fi!
