Awards

Washington quarter controversy

This entry should be expanded upon. I know there is more to this story. I cannot find a detailed written reference at the moment. In short, the reason Ms. Fraser's design was passed over in favor of John Flanagan's was because Andrew Mellon could not tolerate the idea of a woman designing a U.S. coin, no matter how good the design. That's actually something of a myth, as Mellon had several times approved Mrs. Fraser's designs for commemorative coins. See Washington quarter.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:00, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
