[edit]"Lambourn may be the location of 'Marygreen' of Jude the Obscure in Thomas Hardy's Wessex, but this is usually thought to be Fawley."
I first amended and then removed the reference to Lambourn being Marygreen in Jude the Obscure from Thomas Hardy's Wessex. All the references to Marygreen that I can find make it Fawley and there is circumstantial evidence to that effect; the main character's name is Jude Fawley and Hardy's grandmother lived there. I have just skimmed through the references to Marygreen in the novel and it is clear that the village is on a hill, near the ridgeway, a dozen miles north of Kennetbridge (Newbury) on the main road to Alfredstown (Wantage). All these features point to Fawley, as Lambourn is in a valley, is a dozen miles to the north-west of Newbury and is not on the main road between Newbury and Wantage. I have walked to Fawley from lambourn (where I live) and several features mentioned in the novel are there, to my eyes at least. If a reference can be found that suggests Lambourn was Marygreen we can restore it, after all Hardy did not name the real towns referred to in his novels and there is room for speculation.
