Hi, I'll be reviewing this article for GA status and should have my full review up shortly. Dana boomer (talk) 16:25, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I am going to fail this article's nomination for GA status. The most serious issue is the sourcing, but there are also quite a few other problems:

  • There is a significant amount of unsourced information. Statistics, opinions, quotes, etc. need references. This is the biggest issue with the article, and it will take the longest to fix. Examples include the first paragraph of the Lagos Mainland section, the last two paragraphs of the Census data section, the first paragraph of the Economy section and the first paragraph of the Highways section, although there are bits and pieces throughout the article that need referencing.
  • 9 dead links (see this tool for details) that leave information virtually unreferenced.
  • What makes these references reliable?:
    • #9 - Edo Nation
    • #15 - The Transmitter
    • #18 - Giant Cities of Tiny Islands
    • #26 - Nigerian Muse
    • #31, 32 - OTAL
  • Many refs need additional information. All web refs should include a title, publisher and access date at the very least.
  • History section is very incomplete and choppy. What time period are we talking about in the first paragraph? When did the city first come into existence as a war camp? Did nothing happen there between 1472 and 1861? Has nothing happened there since 1991? More details and more referencing (the second paragraph is currently unreferenced and gives varying explanations) is needed. For instance, there are links in the See also section to 2006 Abule Egba pipeline explosion and 2006 Atlas Creek pipeline explosion - why not give more detail about these things in the history section and move the links up here? Same with the Treaty of Lagos.
  • Economy section could also stand to be expanded - I am surprised to see only three paragraphs for a major population center. Is there any manufacturing? Agriculture around the city? Where is the crude oil coming from that is being shipped from here? Anything in the IT industry? What is the railhead used for? How has the high standard of living been developed and maintained? Where do all of these people work?
  • Notable people - NO sources!! What is the criteria for inclusion in this list?
  • Census data for Lagos could probably be renamed "Demographics", as this seems to be a more common title for this section, based on looking at other city articles.
  • For an article of this size, WP:LEAD recommends 3-4 paragraphs of lead.
  • Individual sections should have more than one or two sentences. These very short sections should be combined with other sections or expanded.
  • The prose needs a go over... "apartments are blooming up everywhere.", for instance, is not grammatically correct, while "A planned extensive urban rail system running through the Lagos metropolis." is not a complete sentence.
  • Standardize to one variety of English - I see both -ization and -isation, for instance.
  • Two dab links, Yaba and Iddo.

While I see that the nominator has been doing quite a bit of work on this article, and I applaud their efforts, I am going to fail this article's GA nomination because of the sheer amount of work that is needed. The work on referencing and the expansion of a couple of sections are going to need some significant time and attention, and basic information on the city's history and economy are a must for this article to be successful at GAN. Please take some time to work on the points above, and then renominate at GAN when you feel it meets the WP:Good article criteria.
