I’ve raised a query regarding the copyright status of the image at Commons. It’s clearly Alexander Bassano’s original, although it’s been retouched/coloured. This would suggest that the copyright belongs with the National Portrait Gallery, [1]. KJP1 (talk) 00:45, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The national Portrait gallery owns a copy of the photograph. There were many copies made, copyright reflects only to the scanned image that the national portrait gallery owns, not to other copies that exists elsewhere, for example, if the British museum holds a copy to a scanned print and then the MET museum (USA) owns exactly the same print.. both institutions hold copyright over their own prints and no breaching in copyright has occurred (Here's two such examples of Punch images: this from the MET, and this from the British museum).
Gwrych Castle preservation trust owns a copy of this and as a result, no copyright infringement has occurred, I hope this addresses your concerns. Hogyncymru (talk) 22:07, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
